Bahamas--WWII generation--Bway actor--just had to add up to Mr. Poitier.
Here's a quick Sidney Poitier story: When I was in college, my acting teacher was a fellow named Lloyd Richards. When he was a young aspiring actor himself, Lloyd and his aspiring actor friend Sidney were then so poor they would pool their money to buy a hot dog and split it between the two of them for the day's meal. They used to swear to one another that if one of them ever made it, they would help the other one out. Eventually Sidney got some Hollywood recognition, and he was tapped to play the lead on Broadway for A Raisin in the Sun. Sidney remembered the pact he had made with Lloyd, and told the producers he would not star in the play unless Lloyd was the director. And so Lloyd became the first African-American to direct a Broadway play. Lloyd went on to became an acclaimed director, teacher, and nurturer of playwrights. Sidney had kept his promise. I'll pass.

6. I turned down the offer from the Cardinals and moved to Los Angeles. My big break came as an actor when I was discovered while working at a local "Parks and Rec" department.

8. I had the amazing luck/skill/good timing to be cast in an opening credit starring role in four different TV shows in three different decades. Each of my shows ran at least 3 seasons.

10. My second wife did also end up in Playboy, but she refused to be nude and had a more conservative modeling shoot. 11. For my break out role, I beat out a lot of people. One who did not get my role was a young Burt Reynolds.

13. My third show was based on a fiction book, written by a military reporter, based on a true and real test pilot's plane crash. 14. My third show is probably the one I was known best for. 15. In my third show, I had a lunch box and a pinball machine with my likeness on it. 16. Judge my voice as you wish, but in my 4th show, I was allowed to sing the theme song. 17. In my first show, I may have been the first person to say the "B" word on national network TV, as I played a man who had been born out of wedlock and announced it. 18. As my career has been winding down with age, I was on a Marvel, made-for-tv movie. I played the commander of a police squad who proved to be working for the bad guy.
