I was tempted to say you were right Landmark, and that it was Orson Welles. but I can't bring myself to do that.
7. My oldest daughter came to grief as a toddler, she was killed in a swimming pool accident. Somehow we carried on.

I think Lou Costello lost a child in a swimming pool accident, but he doesn't fit with anything else.

Thinking out loud since we've had so many clues already:
Famous acting families...Eddie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher-- but he didn't make a lot of movies as far as I can remember. Christopher Plummer, Tammy Grimes, Amanda Plummer... he wasn't born in Detroit I'm pretty sure, nor worked with Tarentino. ..., Blythe Danner, Gwenyth Paltrow. Was Blythe married to someone famous? Did Gwenyth ever win an Oscar? And how the heck do you spell her name anyway? Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, Jamie Lee Curtis...Tony's too old and a New Yorker. The Barrymores... I doubt any of them worked with Roger Corman or were born in Detroit. I know this is going to be a head-slapper, and I'll be all like, how could I have not guessed him, but I'm out of ideas.

13. Most people think of me as off beat, or a character actor. However, I can easily handle serious leading roles, and one of my Oscar nominations (Best Actor) was for exactly that type.

Well, Karnak did it again. Bruce Dern is correct.
15. I was one of two heroes in Alfred Hitchcock's last film. 16. I may have been the only one to have shot and killed John Wayne in cold blood. It was in the movie "The Cowboys." 17. I have played good guys a few times, but usually I am the bad one. btw if you can find and rent the movie Silent Running, you will see a very different Bruce Dern in a powerful sci-fi character study film.

I know the movie Silent Running... but didn't know the name Bruce Dern.
I still recall the day I met Beaker from the Muppets. He said to me "Meep, meep, mee mee mee Meep!", and that has made all the difference.
