Almost 40 years ago, when I lived in LA, I befriended Butch Patrick (who as a child starred in The Munsters). His dad ran an illegal gambling joint named The Church. He even handed out business cards for it!

Tommy's got it! Bugsy Siegal and Lucky Luciano were Lansky's childhood friends. In return for springing Lucky from prison, Lansky's boys kept an eye out for German subs. In 1929, Lansky figured they could make more money by combining the Italian, Jewish and Irish mobs. The mob basically owned Batista in Cuba, letting Batista keep the proceeds from the slot machines, while the Cuban government subsidized the building of the mobs hotels there. The authorities were shocked that when he died his estate was only worth $57,000. Well...he knew more about offshore accounts than anyone at the time...and he had compromising pics of J. Edgar and Clyde.

The hilarious thing is that his grandson is demanding that the Cuban govt compensate the family for the loss of the hotels after the Revolution!

One last Lansky story--when Godfather III came out, he told Lee Strasberg who played the character based on Lansky, Hyman Roth, that he did a good job, but he should have made him more sympathetic.
