Heeeeeeere's Landmark! You got it: John (Johnny) William Carson. My last clue would have been:

15. Paul Anka wrote the music for my theme song, but although the lyrics I wrote were never used, I still claimed 50 percent of the song's performance royalties.

Just out of interest (see clue #13): Bob Newhart, Jackie Gleason, Groucho Marx, and Joey Bishop all also declined to host the Tonight Show.

1. I dropped out of high school at 16 to pursue acting. When I was around 18, I was looking at a TV show and I said, 'If these actors are making a living at it, and they're not really that good, I can't do any worse than them.'

2. For a while, my father was more famous than I was.

3. I won an Academy Award for an American picture--but I only spoke eight lines of English in it.
