Tina Louise (“Ginger”).
For a supernatural chiller mixing magic (prestidigitation, legerdemain) with Magic (theurgy, thaumaturgy, mysticism), check out my novel MAGIC: AN OCCULT THRILLER at http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Occult-Thriller-Reed-Hall/dp/1453874836

There we are Karnak, Tina Louise it is. Good thing too, I only had one and a half more clues left.
17. One of the reasons for the friction on the set was that I felt (somehow) that I was to be the star of the show that turned out to be an ensemble cast. 18. In the 1990s there was talk of making a movie out of the TV series that would feature an all-star cast of Martin Short, John Goodman, Steve Martin, and Dan Ackroyd. The females were neither cast nor spoken of, and the movie was never made.

Way back when, I missed a turn because I was far too busy, so I'll make up for that now.
1. I was born in Woodbury, NJ. 2. During World War II, I organized the United States Army's 92nd Infantry Division's track and field team. 3. I never married. |

Hmmm.
No takers yet. OK: 4. After leaving the army, I returned to my alma mater and for six years taught English, French, and Comparative Literature. |

My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Since you haven't gotten a lot of responses yet, I hope you don't mind if I do some quiz show type thinking out loud...
It can't be Sam b/c this guy was active in WWII--so probably born around the early 1920s; bit player with the Joe Papp's NYSF back in what I guess would be the late fifties or early sixties. Many of those actors that started with Joe Papp were loyal to him and did starring roles with him later in their careers. The writing and directing clue should really nail it, but I can't think who it could be. I was going to say Walter Matthau, but I don't think he wrote or directed but it's someone like him, of his generation, who started out as a NY theater actor. Jack Lemmon? Smart enough and possibly a college athlete, but I don't think he ever worked with Joe Papp. James Earl Jones?--could be, but I think he's a bit too young for WWII, no and he never wrote. That clue # 7 is the key! But was it a Bway production or just some off or off off Bway vanity thing? What plays were running in 1966 in NY? Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof I think, musicals. Straight plays? Maybe Barefoot in the Park or The Odd Couple? This guy was probably around 40-ish in 1966. Did he also star in the show he wrote and directed? A one man show? Okay, I'm going with Hal Holbrook.

As an aside – definitely not to construed as a clue – one of the erroneous guesses so far happened to star in that play I wrote and directed.

10. Unbeknownst to me, the author of these clues named one of his cats (Carlton, a tuxedo) after a character I portrayed in a guest rôle in a popular television series in 1983. My most memorable line (delivered in response to the remark, "I'm telling it like it is!" by the gentleman at whom I was aiming a pistol) is: "Please: tell it as it is. Don't die with wretched grammar on your lips." |
