Your clues bring to mind either The Jeffersons, or another show featuring a junk yard owner. But I can’t think of the stars’ names.

I was (I have passed from this mortal coil) a shy and intensely private man, described by some as reclusive. I avoided the Hollywood limelight and little of my personal life was public knowledge beyond the facts that I never married and had no children. Of the character that made me famous, I said, "Playing (this character) was hard for me. But he was the character. I had to do it."
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Sherman Hemsley is correct.
The rumor that Sherman married Barbara Billingsley has never been proven ;p

Not sure who is up between me and Foolsnobody, but I am ready so I will go for it.
1) I was born in 1951 in Southern California 2) My mother was an actress, but not one most people would recognize by name. 3) My mother played a character that was probably more famous and well known than she was.

Not Huey, though I think that is a great guess.
8) In 1976 I had a breakthrough. I was cast in a horror movie to play a friendly teenager type; my character was killed before the end of the movie.
