I remained in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and was promoted to brigadier general in 1959.

I finally retired in 1968, and was awarded the United States Air Force Distinguished Service Medal.

However, flying airplanes was not my only interest in life. While studying at Princeton University, I became attracted to the school's drama and music clubs.

You got it, Mark!

In 1935, I landed the first of several supporting roles in movies, and in 1938 I had my big breakthrough in a comedy directed by Frank Capra.

Although nominated for an Academy Award five times, I only won once in my over 50-year career.

I remained unmarried until my 40s and was dubbed "The Great American Bachelor" by the press.

In 1949, I married a former model. We had twin daughters, and I adopted her two sons from her previous marriage. The marriage lasted until my wife’s death in 1994. I died of a pulmonary embolism three years later.

I was known for playing everyday men with real-life problems, and appeared in some of the most popular films of all time.

Your turn ...

Not Robert.

I sing and played the double bass with a folk song trio called The Bordermen.

I had a top 40 hit "Naturally Stoned" in 1968 as part of the duo The Avant-Garde.

I also worked as a truck driver to supplement my income.

Not Peter,Tommy or Dick.

As a solo artist he released 5 records with Columbia, after 1970 he signed with RCA.

In 1971 he turned to acting.

In the late 70s he returned to his singing career. I charted on Hot Country Songs with "Painted Lady" & "The Greatest Love Affair".

I appeared as my self in the 1989 film Cold Feet.

I performed as Mr. Dingle on the children's TV series New Zoo Revue in the early 1970s.
