Haha, I remember "New Zoo Review". Doug & Emmy Jo!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I was born in an affluent suburb just west of Chicago.
My father was a physician, and my mother, a musician. Because my sister and I resembled one another strongly, my mother wanted us to appear as twins. So in my first three years, she kept my hair long and dressed us both in similarly frilly, feminine clothing. |

My mother taught me to play the cello despite my refusal to learn; though later in life I admitted the music lessons had been beneficial to my profession.

Ernest Hemingway (one m) is correct, Feral.
In 1921, I married the first of my four wives. We moved to Paris where I worked as a foreign correspondent. I got divorced in 1927, a year after my debut novel was published. That same year I married my second wife. We divorced in 1939. I married my third wife in 1940. But we separated after I met my fourth wife in London during World War II. As a journalist, I was present with Allied troops at the Normandy landings, as well as the liberation of Paris. I almost died in 1954 after plane crashes on successive days, with injuries leaving me in pain and ill health for much of the rest of my life. When I received a Nobel Prize in 1954, I modestly told the press that Carl Sandburg, Isak Dinesen and Bernard Berenson deserved the prize. Nevertheless, I gladly accepted the prize money! In 1959, I bought a house in Idaho where, in mid-1961, I committed suicide. One of my three houses listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places is famous for its large population of polydactyl cats. My experiences while traveling as a journalist in war zones formed the basis for some of my best-known novels. My economical and understated writing style -- which I termed the “iceberg theory” -- had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction. .......... OK Feral, your turn to post some clues! |

Feral, folks on this thread like to keep the game flowing. You’re welcome to participate anytime. But this is the second time you’ve popped in, guessed correctly, and then held up the game.
So please, be kind enough not to post unless you’re willing to check back at least two or three times every day. By waiting for several days, you hang the rest of us up, which is extremely frustrating. One more thing: No Googling or Wikipedia-ing is allowed. We all rely on “ze little grey cells”. I’ll start us off again with a new set of clues: My mother is of three-quarters Irish and one-quarter Italian descent, and earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Rice University. My father was born and raised in Cuba, the son of a Canary Islander who immigrated to Cuba as child. As a teenager in the 1950s, he was beaten by agents of Fulgencio Batista for opposing the Batista regime. He left Cuba in 1957 to attend college in the USA, and obtained political asylum after his four-year student visa expired. |

After a brief separation in 1974, my parents reconciled and relocated the family to Houston.
During high school, I participated in a program that taught students the philosophies of economists such as Milton Friedman and Frédéric Bastiat. |
