I was born in an affluent suburb just west of Chicago.

After high school, I was briefly employed as a reporter for The Kansas City Star.

In December 1917, after being rejected by the U.S. Army for poor eyesight, I responded to a Red Cross recruitment effort and signed on to be an ambulance driver in Italy.

So please, be kind enough not to post unless you’re willing to check back at least two or three times every day. By waiting for several days, you hang the rest of us up, which is extremely frustrating.

I’ll start us off again with a new set of clues:

My mother is of three-quarters Irish and one-quarter Italian descent, and earned an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Rice University.
