Has anyone ever done an effect like a pk touch, but instead of being tapped, the participant feels like they are being choked. Mind you there is no other person involved, the performer uses psychokinesis to choke the person.

Yes. Anthony Jaquin was the first I'd seen. Think he only taught it in lectures.

As the video is private I cannot compare, but a Jedi Mind Choke effect is also part of Bigger Fish Files of Peter Turner

Why would a performer want any spectators to feel they were choking?

To those unfamiliar with the PK Choke effect, it isn't choking like someone gagging on a piece of steak.
It's more the feeling that you can't swallow, and your throat is in a state of discomfort as it, for lack of a better word, has partially "seized up." This does NOT happen in such a way that the spectator feels danger, but rather discomfort. This can be an amazing demonstration for the participant and for anyone else who is watching.

Peter Turner's is the most practical I've come across. That one is in the Bigger Fish Files. Jay Noblezada as mentioned has his released on Penguin and was personally for me, the first I've seen for this plot.
Also look into Speechless by Brandon Queen. It runs in the vein of PK/Jedi choke type routines. Very workable as well. |

The effect I've been working on is a little different than that. In my effect the spectator actually feels difficulty breathing. They also admit too feeling a little bit panicky, but theres no real danger. I first came across the version where the spectator feels like they can't swallow in Phathom, but I felt like that was not real enough. They couldn't swallow, but they could still breathe, even with the different experiences. I'm talking about a pulse stop, but with your lungs.

So very similar to what Luke Jermay describes in Building Blocks (he doesn't have a method for a psy-choke BUT the principles can certainly be modified and massaged so that we can use it for a psy-choke, just understand that at some points you will be dealing with a DR kind of situation, you can PM me and I'll describe this in more detail if you wish and if it would help you out). |

Sounds like a creepy and ego driven kind of thing to do...unless you're a professional Sith...

While I agree it can, I don’t think this has to be ego driven. I think the Nocebo effect is fascinating. If you talk about how (most ?) of “witch doctor” methods work, this becomes a fascinating look at how the mind works. This is a darker version of curing hiccups, which is a great opportunistic effect itself.

Chocking seems like a liability to me, and communicates something I can’t personally abide, FWIW.

The naysayers seem to be basing their objections on the name of the effect: PK Choke.
It is a misnomer, as there is no choking involved. It would be like refusing to perform a "Bank Night" effect because robbing banks is against your ethos. It's just a name, people. This type of routine is about demonstrating how words, ideas, suggestion, influence, etc. can have a palpable effect on one's physiology. The few times I've performed it was as an intro to the topic of embodied cognition theory. To that extent, it worked wonderfully to get the audience engaged and focused on the topic at hand...and no one was in danger of choking!
