Puzzling, it begins on page 296 and ends on page 299 in my copy. Dick never said if there was additional printings.

So I got three extra pages of Dick's excellent material! Smile 296 in mine is the count for the Professor's Nightmare.

There is a fun mention in the March 1937 Linking Ring in the Five Minutes with Frank Lane article.

"The most important thing this month was Gen Grant's new store. Well, Gen's pretty well sold on my new Utility Gimmick, so I promised to go down to N'Yawk and mystify the boys. Gen tried to get Lester Lake to put his head in the Lion's mouth he thought it would be a good opening.'but Lester I guess, is just rising to the surface out there in the floods. I knew you'd rise to the top, Lester...Gen's got the Real Magic Store that a magician dreams about...a beautiful place, tile floors, tile booths, beautiful full length wall mirrors, couches, end stands with smoking trays, deep, comfortable arm chairs and Percy Abbott's Tip See Bottle trick, which is a pip, and which Grant sold about 175 the first week he was in business...(You're welcome, Percy)."

Getting back to Nat's question the Gene Anderson Newspaper Tear is an excellent closer. His book is excellent as well, it is available on his website Gene Anderson.

For walk-in engagements where I work from single case they are...

Opener: Fantasio Color Changing Cane to Silks / 20th Century Silks

Closer: Linking Rings (with rings falling off the arm linking) followed by Fantasio Appearing Cane amid applause.

For events where I set up with music, backdrop, tables, and platform the opener currently changes to:

Fantasio Color Changing Cane to Plume / Marshall Garden of Flowers / Tora Flower Pot

Frank, it sounds like you stole one of my opening acts, from the 1980's. Nice to see other magicians like real magic effects as well.

Nat, Gene Anderson is offering one of his opening routines for free called Star Of The Show.

https://www.geneanderson.com/starshow.html

Don't worry, you do not have to give any info, or make a fake order like some websites. Just download it.

Interesting thread.

I will recommend Bill Abbott's 5 card opener. You know the trick, but Abbott's presentation conditions the audience to applaud and speak out. Just what a performer wants.

At the time, I was performing for Nursing/assisted living homes - they tended to be not so responsive. So I was apprehensive performing this for audiences that tend to be passive.. boy was I wrong! They responded wonderfully!

Highly recommended.

I close with a song. Its a memory feat that is more impressive than any trick in my show. Its very vaudeville to end with a song.

Confabulation or ESPacology ending. Tie the plot of the effect to the opening by either mysteriously placing a prediction on stage or setting up the suspense with a story or action. Hitchcock MacGuffin technique.
For the opening routine I like to use a game style effect which is very light and opens up the audience with general interaction.
Sincerely,

the mind of a hypocritical paradox,
portraying the art of serious mischief.
