I think that the term "perceptionist" was invented by Neil Rutledge... He defines it as "using the 5 senses to create the illusion of a sixth.
A great definition and... true. But saying you went to Hogwarts has more charm, I'm the first to admit that !

This is causing me quite a bit of hassle at the moment too. I am writing a CV for my first job, unrelated to mentalism and trying to describe what I do is a pretty tricky. I don't want to say "psychic" or "magic", and I doubt "mentalist" will mean much. I like Perceptionist, but it has even less meaning than mentalist.lol We really could do with a nice label that isn't weerd and doesn't sound scary.
I personally dis-like psychological illusionist, I think the illusionist part is as bad as saying magician. just my opinion.

This discussion has encouraged me to raise a question that I had passed over a few weeks ago after viewing Jerry McCambridge's TV special "The Mentalist." I decided not to ask it at that time because most of the discussion was about the routines.
I wondered at that time if the title of the show meant anything to the "lay" public. In other words, did the advertising of a mentalist performing raise interest among the masses? As I thought about it, I wonderd if "The Mindreader" would convey the idea of the show better. I'm not saying that "The Mindreader" is the best title, as I haven't spent much time on this, but I hope you can understand what I am getting at. Anyone out there have any thoughts on this as it pertains to this thread? Terry

Looch,
I'm all outta bricks...anyone got a line on some good wholesale prices? Nathan Pain Terry, I'm clueless...I just need to make up some business cards, but I don't know what the heck I do! A friend of mine watched the show and asked me if I could do stuff like that magician that was on tv the other night...so there you go...one layman's perception of the term, mentalist=magician. Terry,
I was thinking also about how much could help having a guy like McCambridge with that show on air. Maybe is a way to put the word Mentalist on the mainstream map, or just a way to attach that word to himself. Anyway, I think that “Mindreader” is a lot clearer than “Mentalist”. For a bussiness card, “Mindreader” is really powerful. Just be prepared to give a demonstration every time you give your card to someone. |

Sorry to drag this topic back to the top of the pile but...
Im haveing this problem also. Ive desided its time for me to break out of my commfort zones and get out there more, but to do that you have to 'label' yourself and stick to that 'label'. Im tossing and turning ideas in my head and never quite setterling on one, 'Mindreader' I feel is a powerfull thing to call your self but doesn't say enough to explain other effects, for example suggestion/mental influence effects, don't really sit well with mindreader and will just confuse the audience. 'Mentalist' here in the UK, hmmmmmmm, you might as well call yourself a Mad Man. 'Psychological Magician' sits very well with me but most of you would disagree with it as it has the word Magician there. Personaly I'm not bothered by it, because... A) You are clearly a 'type' of 'magician' and do some kind of 'magical type entertainment'. And there is no use in deludeing yourself otherwise, If you could do this for 'real' (i.e. know exactly what people are thinking, influence them to do anything at your wim etc.) you would be a millionare by now and not squizing past waiters or standing on a stage infront of the WI, (dont get me wrong, that does not mean I or you should not put real effort in to makeing convincing illusions of mindreading but don't kid yourself in to thinking that these people think that you know there every thought. There is a limit to what you can do, hence why I am not a millionare and I create these little 'things', 'experements'.) And B) If someone says/calls me a magician or says I do magic I will correct them by saying Im acctually a 'Psychological Magician'. And if I did that, if I made the effort to correct them, then there is clearly a difference. Also once people see the defference because I perform something that's nothing like there perception of what 'magic' is, there next conclusion will be 'psychic' or something simmiler but I make of point of telling them I am not psychic. I kind of keep them guessing, but subtily incorige them to come to the conclusion of psychologyical techniques and skills as being the method. So whats the point of this long, brain-storming rant, I don't know.

My agents refer to me as a "psychic entertainer". |

Sometimes I say mentalist, but many have no idea what that is.
Usually I say mind reader or psychic entertainer. Steve

I prefere psychic entertainer, no one here know's mentalist I don't like the term fortune teller though have often been called one, hypnotist is accurate and one of my qualifications but I do far more then that on it's own. Magician could be wrong for me simply because I think magicans skillwise are far better then me, I put a lot of acting around a tiny effect, so in the end I'm as confused as every one elese and I'm several years at this
