I'm not new to magic. I have been performing for about 10 years now. However, I have never really gotten involved in magic groups that meet and share ideas. My question is, how does someone become part of one of these groups and how do you find out where and when they meet? I live in Long Island, NY.

You can go to the IBM site and find out where they meet and who is in charge.
I think you can do the same with the SAM.

The easiest way is to call and ask someone at your local brick and mortar magic shop.
A second way is to look for an active Café member who lives in your area and send a PM to find out if he/she is aware of any such meetings and to get his/her take on the group and its activities. |

You can go to IBM or SAM web site to find out if any of the magic clubs are in your area. And when they meet.

And don't forget Ring 2100 on the internet. It is more of a forum not unlike the Magic Café' except I think you must be a member of IBM (not sure).
Someone on the Café can set this straight as many Café' members are also members of Ring 2100. Iven

Go to the IBM and SAM sites and they usually show where the closet ring to your location meets.

I am a IBM member of ring 211, and yes you do need to be an IBM member for ring 2100. there is a small membership fee for ring 2100 as there is for all rings.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I contacted my local IBM ring and I plan on attending their next meeting.
Irossall, The person that I spoke to said that I can attend a couple of meetings on a trial basis without paying any dues. Maybe that is why you haven't had to pay yet. |

For those of you who are members of groups:
I am looking at joining my local IBM ring. I am not exactly sure if I should wait to become more experienced before joining. I am somewhere between beginner and mid-amateur (Does that make sense?) I have been performing for two years as a magician for charity outfits. I crave advanced skills and some leadership, but I don't want to be the only real amateur in the outfit.. At what point to go to one of these meets and check it out? Thanks, digimaestro |

Digimaestro,
The IBM application requires that you be at least 18 years of age and interested in magic for at least two years (12 years of age and 1 year for junior membership). So it sound like you certainly qualify as respects the "rules". The membership of the local IBM Ring to which I belong includes members at all skill levels. There are seasoned magicians with decades of experience and relative newcomers who are just looking for help in improving their technique and ability. The veterans take pleasure in sharing their knowledge with the less experienced and everyone benefits. Beyond that, there is the comradeship of a bunch of great guys and gals who share the same interests that you do. I was much too late in joining and wish I had done so years earlier than I did. I would suggest you give it a try and see what you find with your local group. Most groups are quite pleased to have propspective members attend a meeting or two on a trial basis. |

Good point. I did not mean to slight the SAM and, in fact, I belong to that fine organization also. The main point is, getting involved in one or the other (or both) is a valuable way to help yourself progress, and you just might make some good friends in the process.
These groups are not trying to exclude people, they are always looking for bonafide member prospects who can help carry on their good work. Gosh, I guess we left out The Magic Circle. They're a great bunch of guys also! |

OK,
The IBM has a ring in my city... so I will start there as the SAM group meets 30 miles away. Thanks. digimaestro |

You will very quickly find that you are not the only amateur in the room. That can be interpreted in many ways.
