That’s more than one, Magicfish. If that had been an option, I definitely would have included at least one Harry Lorayne book.

I'd take the Lord of the Rings. Much as I love magic in the sense of conjuring, there's more magic packed into Tolkien's book than all the conjuring books in the world. I'm referring to magic not in the sense of "fantasy," but in the sense of ineffable, poetic descriptions of nature, of landscape personified. IMHO, that's *real* magic!

Nice choice Bob, an unusual poetic one.
I would take my personal notes with me. There is more ideas there to explore than several lives would allow me to study ! And if it has to be a published book, I would go with Tarbell. |

Thanks, Rachmaninov, for the compliment. And weird wizard, I like your idea of "materialized thoughts." That's the joy of writing, isn't it? -- to turn intangible thoughts that excite us into something concrete that one day we may be able to share with others.

If I were going to take just one conjuring book to my island, I'd want it to be something that I could grow into. I suppose I'm a late beginner -- not a complete novice, but probably closer to beginner than intermediate. During the years that I was waiting for that ship to come and rescue me, I'd hope to make some progress in magic, so I'd need a book that took me gently from beginner to at least intermediate. I'm tempted to say Card College, but some may object that that's five books! Also, I'd hope to learn a variety of different kinds of magic -- cards, balls, thimbles, coins... Maybe Mark Wilson's book?? I dunno, this is a tough one. My library is fairly modest, but it does give me different authors' perspectives on performance, sleights, tricks, plots, and misdirection, and I thrive on a variety of options from which to choose. It's hard to imagine that one book would fit the bill.
Sigh... I guess I'd have to stick with my original idea, The Lord of the Rings. |

I’d take “Classic Secrets Of Magic” by Bob Elliot.
Would you believe there isn't one stinkin double undercut in that book?! |

Not just for nostalgia sake, or the wonderful effects, and the many anecdotes, but how his writing shows so much love and passion for the art that it is infectious. I knew nothing about magic at 19 years old, and didn’t really care to, but after reading just the introduction in this book, my life was changed. I doubt I would have ever picked up magic as a serious hobby thirty years ago if it wasn’t for this truly magical book. And it’s still a great read; full of wit and wisdom and a few hidden gems. Absolutely everyone who loves magic owes it themselves and the art to own this book.

I love reading this book just for the gorgeous and witty prose -- and, as you say, the palpable enthusiasm.

Magic has enjoyed its fair share of skilled technical writers through the years, but very few authors could write a sentence like Henry Hay. Always witty and never wrong.

Gee, and here I always was told that I could write a sentence, even a paragraph, like Henry Hay!!!

You have been one of my favorite authors and performers for over 30 years. I own many of your books and several were considered for the same reason. “The Magic Book” and “Close Up Card Magic” are books that are also held very close to my heart and have been a huge influence on me, as many of your other books, videos, and audio cassettes have (I even collected those). I didn’t consider your “Memory Book” because I unfortunately forgot about it. Seriously, with all due respect Mr. Lorayne, I would like to know what you, as one of my favorite authors, have against Henry Hay and his writings that would prompt your comments. I would be very curious to know. Thank you sir for all you have done for the art. I’m hoping to get “And Finally” for Christmas. Season’s Greetings! Regards, Corey

Fingerjack, I don't think Harry was disparaging Mr. Hay's writing, just pointing out that his own is really good too. And it is. There are some on the forum that cannot resist baiting Mr. Lorayne. To some, Harry may seem to have a big ego. He has, in fact, addressed this in some of his writings. Purported ego aside, Harry has achieved a great deal in his life and didn't have any of the advantages that many of us have enjoyed. He did it though hard work, sacrifice and persistence. Lessons for the rest of us.
It's never crowded on the extra mile....
