Can you believe I've been wrong on

I noticed that they are every other week in the posted schedule, so asked in chat and confirmed that it will still be 49.95 for 30 days, but the lectures will be every two weeks instead of every week.

If you time it correctly, you'll still get three in thirty days.

This is not a comment about whether or not they are worth it, but I didn't see a topic talking about this, so thought people would want to know since the ad copy has not yet been updated.

So my question is this, do they stay in your download area or do you get to download them yourself for safekeeping like you do when you purchase them at full price?

I've been able to download them all along as a Penguin Live subscriber.

With the pass or buying individually - they are placed in your download area to allow you to watch online at your leisure - or so you can then download to your PC/tablet and watch without an internet connection as well from there.

You get to keep the videos you got from the month you subscribe so ~$50 for 4-5 $40 lectures was a pretty good deal. With it now being 2-3 lectures it still works out cheaper, but having the videos come out every 2 weeks is a bit worrying though. Some acts haven't felt like they were worth being sold separately (although the same could be said with some of the lectures). Kind of wish that penguin still added lectures to the 5 for $99 deal but there we go.

I think the price went up and the quality went down when they switched to the "Live Act" format. I much preferred the live lectures.

Seems like Penguin are running out of magicians to come perform for them. Gone are the glory days of the 2013-2016 era

That's true they've had almost every reputable magician perform and lecture. I wonder what they'll do once they run out.

I used to really enjoy the lectures, but they're way too long. I must have 75+ lectures in my collection that I still haven't viewed. I wish they'd create shorter lectures at a lesser price that don't exceed 1:15 minutes (30-minutes of performance time (no fillers) + 30 minutes for explanation plus 15-minutes to cover the intro and closing wrap-up with Dan...The mega-long 3-5 hour lectures are too long to sit-through.

I agree. More is not better as they (and many here) seem to think.

Personally I could not explain a 30 minute performance in 30 minutes. Sure I can explain the mechanics at a basic level but personally I do not find the tricks to be the valuable part of a lecture. For me the reasoning behind the effect as well as behind the method and the subtleties are where the value lies. For example if I use Ramsay subtlety in an effect it takes a second to use Ramsay subtlety but it takes a few minutes to describe the process that I used earlier to train the audience to accept Ramsay subtlety as an empty hand and the reasoning behind that training process. Personally I want to add more value than simply teaching people some more tricks that they don’t really need.

Sure it takes time to watch a good lecture but then it takes far longer to read a good book but I would not want authors to limit the number of pages to make them quicker to read.

My Point of view is that I wonder about that they didn't inform the long term subscribers of theses lectures about the changes (bisect the monthly lectures for the same price is huge).
Is that good business from customers perspective? No!
10 $ more for 4 lecture would be ok for most subscribers or bisect the monthly lectures for 30-35$ would be also ok for me. But to do this change secrecy is dishonest.
that's what I think about this.

I too preferred the live lecture format rather than the live act format.

Technically, as correction to the subject line, it's not doubling in price (it's still the same amount.) It is, to be accurate, reducing the lectures to twice a month - like At The Table's.

That said, I wish they would consider putting "live lecture/old format" lectures on "off-weeks," thereby bringing it back to weekly but with both formats. One week would be live lecture and the alternating week would be "act" format. That would be a win-win for all parties involved - if anyone at Penguin is reading this, please consider. Thanks.

I agree. Initially I was looking forward to the 'act' part to see how some pro's structure their work, but so many of the ones ive seen have been put together just for Penguin means its just a series of effects one after the other. I do enjoy seeing the performances in front of a live audience though.

Yeah, the acts format seemed to give a little promise but it's kind of been underwhelming unless the person going on is doing something unique. I like that it comes with a full performance and that explanations are a little more in-depth than they would be in a lecture format, but do I really need to see everyone's "variations" on the chop cup? Is it fair for Penguin to charge money for someone teaching their ambitious card and have the only interesting piece in their act be "performance only"? Penguin seems to think so

Hello everyone! Josh with Penguin here. I thought I'd jump in and remind everyone that this is all speculation. If the guy on the chat said one way or the other it was just an estimate. Penguin has had changes in pricing and formatting in the past and, while there will be changes in the coming year, those changes in pricing and formatting have not been officially announced as of yet.

Here's a quick reference guide:

What will be the price for next years lectures? It has yet to be decided or announced officially.

Is Penguin changing how often they do lectures? Yes, this is the only thing that has been posted publicly. A price has yet to be announced.

Is Penguin running out of magicians to lecture? Absolutely not. The amount of potential lecturers has gone up over the years. We have more great lecturers to choose from than ever before.

Has Penguin been secretive or dishonest about a price change? The change in price has yet to be decided or written in stone. Penguin can't make an announcement about something that hasn't been decided yet.

Will Penguin stop doing Lectures or Acts? Both the Act and Lecture formats offer their own lists of positives and negatives. We hear constantly from magicians who prefer one over the other. The live acts have produced some amazing results, my personal favorites being Drew Backenstoss, Paul Vigil, Carisa Hendrix, and Laura London's acts. Even after the Live Act format was introduced Penguin has had some great lectures in the old format. Juan Tamariz, David Stone, and Lu Chen all gave great lectures after the Live Act format was introduced.

In the future, it is likely that we will continue this mix of Live Acts and Live Lectures. The talent will likely work with Penguin to decide the format of their lecture.

None of the above is an official statement from Penguin of course. More information is coming and will be announced when it is made available on the site and in the email blast.
