I have been doing the following for the past week, with some great results. It has a built-in out and I don't think it is very original, but I think it will help some people who are straggling to learn how to verbally force a playing card.
I use the BCS but you can use any stack. I do the effect Osterlind explains in his manuscript (and DVD I think), the one where the member of the audience reverses a card into the deck, under the table...and you know which one it is...!!! Instead of going ahead and revealing the name of the card, try and force it verbally to a person!!! There are three very good things about that:

MIC,
Very good! Try this trick next time you do it. If the card is say, the four of spades, say, "Do you want the card to be red or black? Quickly!" Then, "Do you want it to be clubs or spades?!" "High or low?!" Then, "Name a low spade, but not too low!" You will find that if you rush them and always name the selection you want LAST, 9 times out of 10, they will go for it. If you miss, just say, "OK. I was trying to project a spade to you, but you missed. Let's try it again!" But give it a try this way and you may be surprised. As you astutely pointed out, since you supposedly don't know the card, it still kills when you get it. Richard |

Mr. Osterlind thanks for your comment! (I'm very honoured.)
Based on your patter I was inspired and tried out something else. At some participants it seems to help (and works subtly in your favour) if you don't use the word "no" (generally if you don't verbally disagree). Instead use facial expresions and patter yourself like that (lets stick to the four of spades) "High or low?" "High." "Give me a low spade, not too low!" (Depending on your way of presentation you can adapt it but the idea is that maybe something is happening in your head. If you don't make absolute sense it doesn't always matter.) I realized they are more amazed that way rather than if you continuously disagree with them! Anyway I feel it is a very good way to practice both slow and fast verbal forces (and it is great fun too). Thanks m I c |

This is all great stuff. I talked quite a bit in Making Magic Real and Making Real Magic about the frame of mind you need to be in. With that in mind, try this.
After you know what the card is (and they think you haven't a clue) REALLY try to project the card to the third person! Just do what you would really do if you didn't know the card and wanted to try the whole routine for real! This is the best practice in the world for presentation. Richard |

MIC, which manuscript is the original card reverse method in?

I am not 100% confident. I think it IS explained in full in the BCS (Breakthrough Card System) ebook, I am sure it is in the Mind Mysteries DVD (vol. 2). I think it is referred to as "the trick that started it all" (and Corinda Springs to mind as well).
I can't have my hands on any of these at the moment so...someone else might be able to help you more. Sorry for being that vague m I c |

Well, I just use the brainwave deck as an out, see I want to force the Three of Diamonds or the Four of Hearts depending on my mood (both on Derren's the Devil's Picturebook)
I just try to force them, and I always do the brainwave deck. When it works at least I know it would have worked. |

Yes, but I think the effect that way is less powerful! No, the other way around---the effect the way we were discussing it, is more powerful IMO (it's in their hands, and it couldn't even be a force). And there is always the element of suprise. How do you force the Eight of Spades? I think it makes the aspect of psychologically forcing something more intriguing. When you don't know what it is you have to force.
But still the Brainwave Deck is surely a good way to practice forcing! Regards, m I c |

It was about practicing. A verbal force is never surefire
I've had people who seemed like a likely suspect say some card that's not even remotely related to the one I tried to force, and then you're glad you had that brainwave deck. Btw if I do get the force I empty all my pockets and let her feel the one card that's in my pocket. |
