Breakthrough - Johannes Mengel
$19.95 (download) https://www.murphysmagic.com/product.aspx?id=65915 The Hype: You visually slam a coin through the bottom of an empty can. Immediately show the coin inside and hand everything out for examination. That's it. It's that simple! It can't look more real than this. Breakthrough is a true masterpiece that has fooled even the most experienced professionals. It's the most direct, flexible and practical Coin Into Can effect for any situation. My Take: A few years ago, Wayne Houchin put out an effect in conjunction with Criss Angel where you approach someone with a full, unopened can of soda and proceeded to put a borrowed coin inside. Great effect but I think Breakthrough is a definite improvement. From what Johannes says, I don't think that he was aware of Wayne's release as he describes how he discovered the principle used so I think it was an independent discovery. Since the kudos listed on the page include a nice one from Wayne himself, it seems that he has no problem with this. In Wayne's, the can is sealed and you open it and proceed to pour the contents out. If I was the volunteer and a magician poured out a soda that I had just paid for, I think I would be less than happy, so matter how amazing the effect was. Johannes uses an empty can so not only is nothing wasted, but a sticky mess is not dumped on the pavement. Also, your volunteer is less likely to end up with sticky hands. Instruction is via a downloaded 90 minute video. Though English is not Johannes' native language, his command of it is excellent and there are no problems understanding every word. In the video, a link is given for a bonus 17 minute video that can be downloaded free. This video definitely adds to the original as it gives more detailed instruction on an important section of the original routine. The basic working of the effect is easy to understand and also easy to do. The one problem that I had concerning angles is discussed in the bonus video. He gives several methods for cleanup. The most effective leaves you totally clean but might be a problem for those living in the states. It requires a shirt with a pocket on the right hand side. Johannes' shirt has a pocket on each side so he is totally covered. Unfortunately, most US shirts have one pocket on the left side. If you look, you might be able to find a shirt that fits this description but even if you don't, the alternate cleanups look excellent. He also offers a handling that has no angle problems at all. In watching the demo video, you can see just how deceptive this is. I have seen a lot of videos where the trick looks fantastic but only on the video and in the hands of the creator. Not so in this case. It will look just as fantastic in your hands. It will take a while until you are comfortable with this (and some practice in your mirror) but there are no difficult moves or sleights necessary. Johannes' seems a very likeable young man who is very passionate about making sure everything is explained and demonstrated completely. I personally love his handling. One of the better downloads that I have seen recently. The price of $19.95 is more than reasonable (especially since Houchin's still sells for $29.95) Conclusion: If this plot appeals to you, purchase the download and you will be busy mastering this the rest of the day. You will be ready to perform at a party, bar or street with no preparation and have something that will leave them speechless. Highly recommended. |

Great trick but I did run into a problem. A quarter is just a hair large to fit through the hole in a c would do better finding a foreign coin that is the right size.
