I had four shows Saturday the third was for (I was told) 10 to 15 kids and their parents.

I arrive at the address and it is the citie's community center. I am greeted by the husband of the hostess at my car. "We are all looking forward to your show" he says. That is always nice to hear.

I grab my table and case and he leads me to the door. I walk in to find a theater with at least 120 kids and their parents! Hello? Smile Hello ? Smile Anybody? Smile 10 to 15 kids.... hello! Smile

Lucky for me most everything that I had that day played pretty big. I finish the "stage show" and the hostess complains because I didn’t make balloon animals for "all" the kids.

Now I do offer balloons and charge $5.00 more just to cover the cost of the balloons. I asked her if she knew how long it would take me to make a 100 + balloons and that would be a lot more than $5.00. She reminded me that we had agreed on balloons for the kids, I reminded her that was for 15 kids, not 120! She was still upset with me. I gladly took $5.00 off of the balance of the bill and got the heck out of there.

I was MAD Smile If I had known that it was that big of a party and a stage show I would have charged more and would have had more of my stage act with me.

Some people will try to "take you" and get all that they can. This client was dishonest with me from the start and on top of that was rude to me at the job.

But I did a great show, everyone laughed and had a great time. I did my job, but I won’t be taking any more phone calls from this particular client.

These things happen from time to time. If any of you have like stories I would love to hear them!

That kind of c**p used to happen to me all the time. Now, I insist on performance agreements for every show, even birthdays and church shows (and even free shows where it is clearly specified how long my show will be and what my requirements--platform, PA, etc--are).

In my agreement, it is clearly defined what the estimated size of the group will be, and that there will be very specific additional charges for:

-each additional 5 children over the agreed on number

-"waiting time" (if I’m scheduled at 6:00 and don’t go on until 6:30 or so)

-logistical impairments (no mic or platform when they agreed to furnish one; an outdoor show when an indoor one was agreed, etc.

-not having my check ready before the show

I am very flexible as far as going ahead and doing the show, but I do charge them for it if they don’t hold up their end!

Also, I always bring a copy of the agreement to the show with me. Then, if they try to give me grief, I can show them exactly where they signed & agreed to all of these conditions.

Some may think this is going overboard, but it has saved me a myriad of headaches and bad situations!

Great advice GreatScott and John!

John, I think you handled it with class! It is so true that some people will try to take advantage, but you clearly handled it with dignity.

You did a great show, and every child was happy, and you'll get it back in some other way.

Sounds like the way to go Scott. Did you have the contracts signed over the fax? Because the first time that I meet these people is at the event. That is part of the problem. 99% of the shows are fine but it is these boneheads that really get to me.

I also always get 50% in advance. I recommend this to everyone. This eliminates a lot of problems later as well.

John,

One thing that I always do is tell the folks I’ll be sending them two copies of ’our’ agreement, that they should sign both, and return the other to me (in the postage paid envelope I provide) and keep one for their records. Smile

This has always worked well for me, plus it let’s your clients know that they are dealing with a pro. Smile

I fax the agreement to them. I have them sign the contract and fax it to me immediately. Then they return the original to me with the deposit (I also require a 50% deposit). If they want a copy for themselves, they can make one, or you could fax them two copies. I prefer faxing as I usually get the agreement back the same day, as opposed to having to wait a week or more for them to mail it to me. This way, I have a much more current record of when I am booked, should I get a call for a show on the same day.

Thanks Steve. How are my drawings coming along? Smile

Thanks Scott,

I think that is the way to go from now on. It is too bad it has to be that way. But you get burned a few times and then you have no choice. Thanks for the advice I appreciate it. Smile
Thank you,
