For the internet pros out there... I’m seeing a trend for overly simple web site designs. I think this is mostly to keep them mobile friendly, which makes sense.
Any tips or tricks specifically related to current web site design? And while we are at it... any new SEO tips or tricks? |

Naaa...
Mobile responsive doesn't have to be simple. It's just design trends, they change about every 16 months. But historically clean and clear design trends last longer and look current longer than anything trendy. SEO tricks will get you in trouble. Start looking at SEO as a wrench in a toolbox and start thinking more like a mechanic. Figure out your Digital Marketing Goals 1st. Then adapt strategies to achieve those goals. Many times we find that SEO isn't worth the time or money it takes to achieve the goals. overall SEO strategy... - Find what your website ranks for... - Filter that KW list by top 6 positions - use those rankings to see what competition level you can compete with. - look at everything ranking #7 - #30 and pick everything slightly below what your Comp level is currently and re optimize the page. Easy Rankings in about 72hrs ... OR - Audit your local Biz listing and get your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) corrected across the listing - Embed your GMB map on your about us page - Add Business Schema to your website - Build a Semantic Wiki on your site with an entry for all the towns in a 75mile radius .. embeding a Driving direction from that town to your business in each of these. - Submit a GEO Sitemap listing all the wiki location pages (do not add them to your main sitemap or navigation) In low competition markets this Entity stack will let your Google Business listing start to show up in other towns. In higher competition markets this is phase 1 of a location stack. --- Here is one I wished someone would have told me. Become an expert at list building, and email marketing. It is by far the best ROI in all of digital marketing. I still average $3/mnth for every person on my list. --- A Better tip is to join a group who teaches "Full Stack" Digital Marketing (HINT HINT Check out my profile links that I use to get backlinks, and I drop Free tips here to make the page thematically relevant, so giving free tips helps build a slow drip of backlinks, and I can do it without ever promoting myself, except for that one time I kinda sorta promoted myself) But seriously.. There are hundreds of Tactics in Digital Marketing. You have to pick them based off of a few things - Who is your ideal customer? - Where do they hang out and how do they use the internet? - Once you have the Analysis of who, what, how, where... then you select 4 Strategies to take advantage of what you learned. A Strategy for each of these areas Reputation - How are you improving your Reputation and Influence toward your Ideal Client / Audience Reach - How are you going to get infront of more people today than Yesterday Resell - How are you re-promoting yourself to past clients and getting them to buy again, or something new ... If you have a past client database you could always do a DB Reactivation campaign (I have software that can do this) Referral - Turn your past clients into brand ambassadors and incentive's them to market for you. - Then you take your business goals and map them to KPI's and items in each of the 4 strategies you select so you know what is working, what needs improvement, and what needs replaced. I call it the "Blueprint Model" where you do 3 things in a loop 1. Analyze 2. Strategy 3. Tracking If you have any specific questions I am more than happy to chime in.

My Pleasure...
if you need to audit your local listings and your NAP feel free to use https://scan.breakthestatic.com When you put your name in just add -miketest That way the sales team doesn't add you to the marketing list. LOL They hate it when I share it like this, but umm I sign the checks so feel free to audit your listings.

I like the current simple designs that I am seeing.
Good to know about SEO... I'm not going to worry about it too much for now. The list building tip is extremely valuable. Question.... say I'm building a performing website. In building a list... I would have 2 types of visitors. People who like magic and want to see the show, these are people who I would want to market upcoming tour dates, merch, etc. But also I would want to attract people who want to hire the show. Would you suggest 2 lists? |

2 different targets, two different purposes, two differnet markets (one consumer, one professional) - 2 sites.

So... the xyz show site would have email list and info for consumers and on that site there would be a “for booking information contact xyz productions” and that site would have the list for professionals?
That’s what you are suggesting correct? |

Mike, it would be good if you started a forum about Website Marketing. People from all around the world become a member.

@Thomas, yes, if you use multiple sites target that way. It can be done with a single site but that is some serious setup and UI to make it convert well. Much easier and more affordable to do 2 different sites. The Tool I would use for the email list would be Active Campaign. You can build 1 list but use TAGS (a different tag based off of what they joined the list from) to segment, and that way target more effectively
@Dynamike , ummm I do (= we are just getting launched, but I am shutting down my agency and focusing on the coaching aspect of Digital Marketing https://www.blueprintyourmarketing.com" target="_blank"> its ok.. balloon dogs don't bite |

Thanks Mike. I wouldn't be starting with 2 sites but good to know that suggestion. I'll be looking up Active Campaign right now.
I'll be starting from scratch with list building knowledge in general.... I think you're right, it's probably a huge opportunity I've missed over the years. |

So Active Campaign vs. MailChimp? Obviously I like mailchimp cause it's free until you get more than 2,000 members. And the next tier allows you to have 3 "audiences" which could come in quite handy. But am I missing something major?

MailChimp, in the past has not protected their senderscore on the IP ranges https://www.senderscore.org which if you are unlucky and get on one of those servers your emails might not end up in the inbox.
It's also just an email / autoresponder platform. Active Campaign and a few others like DRIP are Marketing Automation tools. They allow you to build systems in your business to help you book gigs. The automation sequences in AC, once they are configured will pay for itself QUICK. The problem sounds like you don't have a active list yet, if you had a list larger than 2k you have outgrown MailChimp because you need to be segmenting and keeping the list warm. Take a little time and got through Andreas stuff.. This guy is the #1 email marketing guy in the world. I have seen him take a dead list and warm it up and print money. https://tinylittlebusinesses.com/list-building/ If you think about it and your market, can you build a 5k list? Are there 20k people in your market that would be an ideal client? If so then you can hit the 2k cap QUICK. So this is a Strategy Stack (not going into massive details, but just an outline with a little meat) - Run a FB Mobile ONLY ad with a giveaway targeting ONLY your ideal audience - The mobile add pushes them into a CHATBOT (I use manychat) - You ask a series of questions to auto segment them, and add them to the email list for the reward - The email list automatically sends them the proper reward - The AC automation has an engagement system where if they don't engage with you in 30 days they are removed from the list and protect your sender score - You need to be sending out an email at least monthly, I send Daily with a 1% unsubscribe and a 15% share (so my list helps grow the list) The sequence above we have used with $2500 ad spend to build a 10k member list (used $500 to build a 3200 person list) - Then you have a email sequence based on the segments you made that you push them into 24hrs after they receive the free offer. - This sequence is designed to warm them up for an offer --- It is 100% about market automation. Don't think of AC as email marketing. It will allow you to dive into FULL STACK marketing.. Where you can move people across marketing platforms, warm them up, and even do lead scoring and pull them through a CRM .

Extremely valuable information Mike. This has got my mind going in some great places. To be clear I'm wanting to build a fan base for my brand as much, maybe even more than I'm wanting to attract clients who want to book my show.
That FB giveaway tip is worth some serious $$$. |

As I am beginning 2020 with some new projects and pushing some old projects forward I keep coming back to this thread to re-read Mike's posts.
What's everybody focusing on in 2020 as far as websites and online marketing? What is everybody using for e-mail lists? Admittedly I signed up for MailChimp cause they have a free starter option. |

I have launched a new site and am going to be going into some high end list building..
Want 10k on the list in 90 days (we know we can get a 15% conversion off the list). Sooo - Using Active Campaign to build automation sequences - Running Facebook Ads to a Chatbot for an Workbook (would work for highly targeted ads to your audience) - Building out some things to do a maildrop (where you pay people with a list to send out an offer to their list) - Building new content

Mike Clay :
Are you aware the website in your previous post points to a dating site with a NSFW picture of a morbidly obese woman wearing underpants? https://thesandiegomagician.com/ Is this a new enterprise? |
