To use devils/demons/imps and such in his posters?

I take it that the red-garbed fellow in this Herrmann the Great poster is Mephistopheles:

And the tall, red garbed figure in this Kellar poster is likely Mephistopheles as well;

In this Kellar poster we see both Mephistophelees and a couple of imps:

I wonder, too, when this practice of associating magicians with demons/imps began--in both literature and art.
