I felt this way about double cross before I started doing it. The rest is history.

I have an handling issues, when the gimmick is loaded at the spectators phone and I wanna switch the light on:
a) if you just hold it down it goes off when you steal the phone due to the lost pressure. How could you possible still press it down? b) to press the button the way the light stays on is quiet difficult in this position? what's the best way? it's not really explained and I struggle with this part of the handling! |

I've read here repeatedly that the spectator will notice when you give them back their phone while claiming it is yours. Two things strongly work in favor of them not noticing. The first is the phone light gimmick this effect brings. Not to overlooked though is the fact that the spectator will not know what the magician's phone is. A spectator, having already been fooled by the light gimmick, will just assume the magician's phone bears a resemblance to their phone if they notice at all since they are focusing on the video screen and what they think is their phone. In fact, it is brilliant in a way because spectators will be naturally suspicious when they relinquish control of their smartphone to a magician. The spectator will naturally watch their phone like a hawk, further tunneling their vision and blinding them to what they are actually holding.
I've said for a while that the best magic tricks have the spectator looking exactly where they think they need or want to look, not misdirection, but focused attention created by proper routine-ing and structure. Nice...

There's a reason this trick has fooled, delighted and made fans of some of the best. It's a killer routine plain and simple. It's been worked by Tobias for years, honed under fire. Put in the practice and you have something incredibly unique and special.

Not convinced yet that having the flashlight on in a bright environment will adequately obscure that fact. But having said that, I’m certainly willing to give it a shot. I’m not a fan of all bold moves but I do like this one. Although I will probably start off using black phones in dimly lit environments until I get the rhythm of it. |

I'm just going to have to get this and put my money where my mouth is. This is all conjecture obviously, but I just think the spectator's brain is going to have their focused attention on what they perceive to be their phone, which is the light shining from "their" phone, in your hand. They are simultaneously handling another phone while trying to film the trick and keep track of their phone/light. I hope it works for you because it seems like a great trick.

Anyone stating that spectators will not be fooled by handing them their own phone is either unable to see how the layers of misdirection and deception work in this effect, or is clearly forgetting that Tobias has been doing just that for a long time with this. But, if you attempt this without confidence, indeed your own actions and guilt may telegraph something to the spectator. Don't perform this until you can confidently do so.

Does anyone worry that the spectator later can watch the video recording in their phone million times and understand the method?

But none of that matters, does it? This is a moment of sheer astonishment - just a moment. It doesn’t have to last a lifetime and the effect is no weaker for that fact. Enjoy it with them and move on to the next audience. |

Chances are they will not stop recording video after they realize they are holding their phone so they can relive that moment of astonishment that they truly felt, which is what they will probably be more interested in watching (and sharing) a million times. |

All that is on their phone is the vanish and them realizing they are holding their own phone. So, yeah, if you completely botch the vanish, they have a permanent record of your failure. Lesson: practice this until you are confident you can do it every time. Work it like any sleight; until it’s 2nd nature. Don’t rush out and show this out of sheer excitement and lack of self-control before it’s ready to be seen.
Also, take advantage of the fact that no one knows a trick is coming. I absolutely do not even hint that I am going to do anything magical or performance-related. So, their guard is completely down. This makes it very easy to switch the phone back into their hands and get into position for the vanish. Also, in case you’re still worried that someone will realize you’ve given them their phone, I performed this tonight for a group of friends and borrowed an android phone for it. I didn’t notice it, but in the corner of her video screen was an image of me (presumably a quick link to a messaging app as she’d messaged me earlier). She didn’t realize at all that she was holding her phone. They won’t necessarily sort it out immediately. If they’ve told themselves the lie that you kept your phone in your hands and handed out yours, on the foundation of a convincing performance and deceptive moves, it will still be baffling. If they have any level of critical thinking ability, then, yes, regardless of whether or not they can sort it all out, they will likely arrive at the conclusion that you handed them back their own phone. But, as mentioned above, so what? That’s still super cool! For some, the idea that you could give them their own phone without them realizing it is cooler than the idea of magic. It would be to me.

The illusion of the switch is so perfect, they can't just jump to that conclusion. They SAW YOU keep their phone in your hands and hand them your phone. They'll swear their phone never went anywhere, it doesn't move. You're holding it in front of you with the flash on, you reach in your jacket to take out your phone but theirs just stays in full view where it always was throughout. They won't be able to work it out. They'll want to assume you handed their phone back, but their brain will work against them. Once they're convinced that the gimmick is their phone, it's game over.
