Oh, and to add, check this is taken from the description of the UC IT video on youtube...

But illucefer is wrong, Jeff Stewart and Meir Yedid did not invent the UC IT gimmick.

You need a a lot of nerve and cold blood for that effect.

This definitely requires some practice time and breaking in of the gimmick. Mine most often closes very slowly once ‘vanished’ - takes about 2 seconds - and makes quite a loud *snap* as it does; this shouldn’t be an issue in places with plenty of ambience, I think. Engaging the switch for the light just before vanishing, I find to be a bit tricky, as well, but, again, putting in the time should solve that.
This is a wonderful bit of magic with a fun surprise moment for the spectator. Please put in the necessary time with it, because, remember, your spectator walks away with a permanent record of your performance, which they may post to social media. And if you botch the vanish, well...

I find it easier to press the button holding the gimmick in my left hand, which I have to do due to my jacket pocket anyway.

Not sure how you’re left-handing the gimmick, as it’s made for the right hand, the way it’s angled and such.

I just tried it last night when I realized I would need to due to my jacket pocket, it seemed fine, and easier to press the button.

Actually, I've just realized.... the jacket pocket thing is irrelevant, cos your not actually using the pocket..,so no one is going to know that I don't have a pocket in the right side of my jacket anyway...

Correct, sir.
I’d actually not mind a simpler vanish that leaves you clean. I like the method that Tobias went with, but I wouldn’t mind a solid (non-folding) gimmick that could be topit-ditched or even with a pulll. Admittedly, this would eliminate the ability to perform it sans jacket, which is a pretty nice feature. And I suspect Tobias played around with these other methods and chose what suited him best and felt most magical to him.

You could easily mod the device yourself if you want, add a pull etc.
one minor discrepancy with the gimmick that I will say from the off is OCD, and probably irrelevant, is the fact that phone screens give off ambient light that reflects on the person looking at the screen...optix doesn't, so... an idea I've had and am going to try just for the hell of it is to stick some blue glow in the dark tape to the inside of the gimmick...it could well cause more issues than it solves..still gonna try it though... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gebildet-Self-A......7D4XPQF4 |

Optix is a great effect, really pleased with it. The gimmick is very cool and Geraint's right, this is definitely better than Tobias' Quantum Glitch prototype.
Switching the light on and off with a hard press needs practice but is getting easier and easier, a suggestion for a v2 if when cl***d if the m****t could switch the light off that would be great. The effect is very well taught, with lots of detail and it's all extremely clever. The vanish is lovely and the phone switch is a thing of beauty! I'm so glad it's not on a pull. The flash covers so much and looks magical when the light is thrown away. It's very bright too and I reckon it can be performed in daylight without any problems. I know exactly where it's going in my set but I don't think the switch is only way to use this gimmick, it is an excellent phone vanish on its own. Whilst I perfect the moves, I'm going to switch flashlight on my iPhone and put this in my pocket, then take Optix out to take a group photo, vanish and pull my iPhone out my pocket with the flash on and take the photo. This is a sweet little routine in itself, as the flashlight completely links the two together so that in the spectator's mind it is the same phone. Then when I'm there with that, I'm definitely doing the switch! I don't think the trailer does it justice, an excellent effect - so much so I'm surprised Tobias released it! Can't wait to use this, Optix will be all over Blackpool!

Anyone come up with a simple solution to the rather loud snapping shut of the gimmick? I'd love to not have to only perform this in noisy environments, and even there I think it might stand out.

Not having purchased this myself (yet) that seems like an important question. I would show this in social settings and in my case those are very often very quiet. I enjoy having friends over at my place or invite them to quieter places where I can have a conversation without raising my voice. Judging by illucifer’s question performing Optix at those occasions is not an option. Is that assumption correct?
Please check regularly if you are becoming the type of magician Jerry Seinfeld jokes about. (This applies to mentalists as well.)

^ there is a snap but it isn't that loud in my opinion. And it happens at the precise moment of vanish...when the light flashes and goes out too. So it could be argued that along with the visual cue of the vanish (light flashing out) the small sound is the audible manifestation of it disappearing. There is a lot to process in that moment so I don't think that's the thing your spec will get stuck on.
Or...just cover it with a Ta-da! Or whatever other patter that goes along with the type of vanish style you are doing. Just my opinion..illucifer's concerns are just as valid. My concern in playing around with it is that component of the gimmick (that is attached to the device) that can potentially be seen from the front by the spec. It sticks out quite a bit, for me, and seems to be very noticeable. Anyone else experiencing this? If so, I'm going to open a thread downstairs for further discussion. |
