Hi there
I saw ben earl doing this and mentioned it in the master push off dvd, but it's not really discussed. Does anyone have any resources on this technique/subtlety? thanks joe |

Are you talking about the Dead Thumb tell and how to not have that?
When you normally deal a card off the top what does it look like? Does your thumb push off the top card or does your other hand just take the top card? I see many people trying to make a natural move unnatural by overthinking it. The Master Push off has the information your looking for from a magical standpoint. Jason England has teaching video downloads on two different types of seconds which are great and detail the information as well. |

Pluck me, I did a 2nd deal in high school to win nickles & dimes to buy grilled cheese sandwiches & fries, my partner winning, during the blackjack craze of '74.... I got busted for my stupid glimpse. Glad I didn't get arrested for the serious stuff we did. We were only kids though & didn't make it a life style.

( I like Jack Carpenter's advice ) Available on at least 2 DVDs. Basically, he says "don't be afraid. Try it outside your living room" Not in those words of course. He's more
articulate then me. ( He's talking about a strike 2nd though ) *the only way to go* |

You'll probably realise that your thumb doesn't life very much at all on your regular deal. I'm not sure I would notice the thumb lift on many deals. Don't sweat it too much.
My only tip is to start exaggerated, then calm it down. Worry about any alignment issues at first, of course. |

There is really nothing new under the sun. In the 1940s, John Scarne produced expose 8mm films of various gambling moves which were shown in movie theaters. One of these moves was a strike second deal expose lifting the thumb after the second card was pulled out. Of course he dealt consecutive seconds lifting the thumb each time. I guess back then it was a new subterfuge apparently making the second deal more deceptive. I have never seen separate instruction for something as simple as that.
Except for demo purposes, in my opinion it is a waste of time. I have never seen a pro hustler dealing seconds under fire lift his thumb after each card dealt. Strictly for demos. |

Cag,
Would you mind elaborating on that? I've been under the impression that, depending on how sharp the company, such details could make or break the deception. What makes other subtleties - for instance the moving thumb on false deals - so important, while learning to raise the thumb is perceived as a waste of time? Glad for any insight you care to share! For a demo, I doubt any knowledgeable person would be deceived by your lifting your thumb after the deal. For someone who is not knowledgeable, it won't matter one way or the other. Using a second in a game is completely different that doing demos. Here the subtleties involve "Grift Sense," which takes a long time under fire to acquire. Lifting the thumb is okay for demos but it's importance in negligible and just the type misinformation and talk that those who don't know and have never been there use to elevate there status and knowledge. This is just demo talk nonsense being promulgated by those who have never moved in a real game. There are a multitude of subtleties that are used when you have Grift Sense but I can't even begin to get into that with you. People who do demos don't have grift sense unless they have actually moved in real games for significant money over time. That leave out 99% plus of demonstrators. So, it can't hurt to lift your thumb but to me it is a waste of time to me. However, it may be a good talking point when magicians get together and impress them. |
