What are you trying to accomplish with this video? I mean yea "promote using YouTube" but what does that even really mean? If you are trying to get your face out there on YouTube, a distinctly visual medium, then it seems odd that in a minute and a half video your face appears in it for about 10 seconds.

It seems like a distracted video. I mean you running out on stage, kids on a platform at the end of a card trick, a banquet setting, some fair strait jacket stuff. All of it with your face in it for about 10 seconds.

So the first question is what are you trying to accomplish with this video? Specifically what do you see as an end goal for this video?

When creating video work backwards from that question and it will make it WAY easier for you to put them together.

I was thinking the same thing. What is the purpose and intent of the video? We kind of need to know that to be able to tell if it can be effective to accomplish what you want. Just being on youtube is not enough. Just like the millions of people that thought that in the beginning when they were new that having a website was the be-all and end-all. When, like video, in reality it depends on the intended purpose, target audience, and other factors. I saw many opposing targets encompassed in it myself, bit that's why I am asking for clarification.

Glad we can see your eyes as in your previous videos that was pretty distracting. Who are you trying to target or reach with this? What is the desired purpose for creating the video?

Lavey,

The good news! Having something is better than having nothing. So, congratulations on putting a little video together.

The bad news! Your promo trailer is not convincing enough to convince someone to call to hire you.

Here is the easiest way to fix it.

1. Go to the website of a performer you know is already booking a lot of shows in the market you are interested in working.

2. Watch their promo video, what kind of shots do they open with? Are there testimonials? Where do they have their still shots and action shots, etc.

3. Once you have their promo video template, duplicate it with your own material and you will be in much better shape.

This should guide you to the results you are looking for.

I would not suggest duplicating things others are doing.

Also in many ways the myth of "something is better than nothing" is quite harmful to progress. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. "Something" bad as a first impression will live forever and people will often simply not be able to get past it.

The real problem with duplicating the things others do is that you can also be branded with exactly that. I know you are only suggesting to duplicate the template. But doing this does not make you stand out much. You are much better off finding out what message you are looking to send and concentrating on that. Let others do what they do.

Danny,

We are going to have to test your theory. Go over to my website www.MikeVanDeCarr.com and watch my video reel. Then, come back here and tell me whose video blueprint I duplicated. Also, let me know who it looks like I'm copying in my unoriginal approach.

If you don't or won't participate in this experiment, then your theory falls flat.

I'm really looking forward to what you will teach me in this test.

No the theory does not fall flat. But if you believe so then great. I am not going to argue at all. Only present my viewpoint is all. This is not a debate or an argument. I am not going to participate in your little experiment.

If it works for you then wonderful.

Glad to see you back posting. Why the entirely new profile and name change here on the Café?

I got away from here for a while. Had to re-focus after losing my in-laws back in 2017. They were parents to me. They were my in-laws for the past 20 years, but I knew them since I was 16. I love them so much and when they passed tragically within six days of each other, I had to stay focused. Which meant being totally immersed in business and caring for my family, while putting all other things aside.

I hustled, built up exactly what I wanted. Then, an agent started contacting me, before long we started working together and between the stuff I book and what he gets for me, I'm non-stop busy.

I took your advice and developed a solid, 55 minute comedy show, you can see highlights from that in my promo reel. After the show was tight, I got some direction from a friend who has a show in Las Vegas. His help was incredible and helped me take it to the level it needed to be at. Now, I've done that 55 minute show almost two hundred times, in front of live audiences. It's been exciting. The last piece of that puzzle is in the works. It'll be complete in the next 45 - 60 days.

It's hard getting out to busk anymore because 3 months in the summer leaves me booked solid (about 50 fair days) during fair season. I was asked to give an hour and fifteen minute speaking presentation at this years convention, back in November. That got outstanding feedback and helped book a lot more fair days. I've also been doing theaters (200-700 seats) and now, my agent has me doing some casinos and colleges, too.

Anyway, the new profile happened when I tried to get back on and couldn't;t remember my old password... Emailed the Café and tried everything, but couldn't get anything to work. So, I just created a new one. Probably won't be on here too often, but it's fun once in a while. After learning how to make everything work, I'm giving back what was given to me. Helping other people to make a good living in this business only makes it better for all of us. Besides, most people want the glory, but don't want to do the work. Those guys will disappear quickly, but for the few that do it, it's awesome!

Hope you had a great Christmas and wish you a healthy and fun New Year!

My observation of the video...

Agree it's not clear as to purpose. Looks like a promo video to get viewers to subscribe to your various social media accounts...but why? Will you be showing videos of shows? Complete routines? Tutorials? Looking for folks to hire you? If they're to hire you, for what? You have a lot of "street magic" in the video, where you're performing for just a few people. While reactions are good, that's not setting people are going to hire you for.

Regarding the reaction shots...they seem long. Your first one, of the two girls on the stage, examining the card, was way too long. And you barely in the shot; wasn't quite sure what she was reacting to. Other shots of one or two people reacting, made me think of Jibrzy's staged videos. Reaction shots are cool, but I some suggestions I'd make:
- Use close up shots or reactions; really get their surprise. But can't tell if by themselves, on stages, or on street.
- Quick cuts of reactions. Not too long
- Try to incorporate yourself in the shot; let people know it's magic

I like the stuff you have on stage..the straight jacket bit looks like fun

Congratulations on getting a video and getting it out there. Good luck

I agree. Almost always when someone posts a "check out my video" post here they never post the intended purpose or context of it. Most only think of in terms of "how I look in this clip or "how well that trick looked in that clip", and so on. Very seldom do you truly get or understand it's intended purpose. I feel the reason for this is they don't create it with a specific purpose, targets or demographics. They don't storyboard it properly and effectively. How can you really create an effective video product if you haven't decided or determined these very crucial and important factors? Unless you are just producing a "look at me, I am a perfrmer" type of ego-video.

This is one area I really find myself offering insight into those coaching students I work with is to better understand the purpose of their video (plus their website promotional materials, positioning, etc.), it's intended use, and ERF or specific desired action.

Same for Vandecarr's video. Same thing, check it out. After posting some personal thoughts and opinions and offering what I would consider some questionable advice to the OP's, he challenges Danny with a "look at mine." After a quick view of his, I see much of the same thing. It was quite long, with minimal actual performing footage, non-targeted, and in some ways either all over the place or showing conflicting demographics. This is my first impression "at a glance." I would likely find 20-30 more things of concern I would have problems with if I to look at it more closely or several times.

Context is king. If we here are having trouble with it, you are almost assured it will miss the mark with the general public.

I agree if this was a first draft to get critique before revising, then good job, as long as you are open-minded to the insight and feedback.

To be fair Mike put out the challenge of "look at mine" to try to tell him whose blueprint he duplicated. Not to hold it out as an example of how a video should be done.

That aside the reason I would not and will not raise to the bait is simple. I am not the target consumer for that video. Odds are pretty good I will not run into 3 of those types of videos my entire life. So having NOT seen them I would have NO IDEA who he was using as a blueprint.

HOWEVER if I was an agent working in that market, or if I was a target demographic looking at many videos in that market and then a great many of them came in looking like they all followed the same template I would not choose one of those. It is not about if I can pick out who was copied, it is about being seen as one of the crowd or unoriginal by the end user. You will not stand out by doing everything the way other successful performers do things.

I get a RIDICULOUS amount of video to go through. I can almost without fail tell you the lines, or the tricks or the silly testimonials or what not that will follow about 5 seconds into the video. I automatically eliminate without even consideration the ones that have copied another template frame for frame. I am not the only person who does this. The other tip off is when a person is "a unique blend of comedy and magic". It is also funny when you read the testimonials that are almost WORD FOR WORD. Now THAT is comedy LOL.

All I am saying is yea it matters. I guess more I am saying it matters in what I do. It really has nothing to do with your show or skills or what not. It is simply about perception is all. It is a bad look to look like everyone else.

Absolutely hilarious! For sure. I couldn't agree more. I feel like sending them a dictionary to look up the word "unique."

My favorite is when they write "a VERY unique blend of comedy and magic". Unique is an absolute state and not subject to gradation. It is unique or it is not. Very is pointless.

How did that go viral and get 7,000 views? Was it posted in places for people to laugh at? It’s horrible. Blasting heavy metal music, low res font on it that looks like Windows Movie Maker from 2007, just a jumbled mess of shots, I’ll stop.

Magicians helping magicians. Just my opinion trying to help:

Like “Rise of Skywalker” it seemed to be a jumbled mess. Perhaps some context. Some text. Something. Anything! Maybe you are advertising to the world, but I’m not even sure who your clientele is or where you are from.

Drop the metal music. I would much rather hear your spectator‘a reactions than the dropped D tuning distortion.

Where are you? Isn’t that what the entire video is about? Selling yourself? I think I saw you for 20 seconds and your website inconsistently flashed here and there in different spaces throughout the video.

Not being harsh. Being honest. Good luck!

Have a beginning and an end. Not just a bunch of clips that have nothing to do with each other.

Contact info? Name? Email? Anything? Simply put, I would not hire you based on this video.
