I have been perfoming for ten years, mostly magic club shows, however I am in the beginning of trying to do this for money. I have been asking around on how to really get started - booking that first show. I have been told to first decide on my target audience - which market I am aiming for. Good advice... you have to know where you're going if you want to get there.
My next question is how do you decide which market is best? I am a mentalist. There are a lot of possible markets, colleges, corporate, private parties, etc etc. How do you decide which is best? Luckily with mentalism it is much easier to do the same basic show for any type or size audience. It adapts much easier than most magic. And since my act fits into so many places I am having trouble really deciding what is best. Any input would be great. Thanks to all in advance. Best regards, London

I like the service clubs because one member of Rotary is usually a member of another club, or knows someone in another club, so if you're good, they'll tell their friends. There's a snowball effect.
I do gambling routines & exposes. So, I will tell a prospective buyer that my show is designed for small audiences. You can work stage, close up, or walk around doing a mental act. If I have done a good job for a client I will ask for referals i.e "Mr. Smith, thank you for the opportunity to entertain your group.. do you happen to know anyone who might like me to perform for their group?" I have just started performing again after a long lay off (14 years), & the service clubs are what I am doing right now. Rick

Here are five possible markets for mentalism.
One would be private party work, usually booked directly by a referral or through a party or special event planner. A second market is fairs and festivals. Russ Burgess has specialized in fairs for years. A third market, and an important one, is colleges. There's nothing like an educated audience for mentalism. The fourth market is asociations and corporations (although they are really two separate, but related markets). Finally, you could market to theaters, although that is not something to get into until you have at least five years under your belt polishing your act. If you are just getting started, begin with your local service clubs and doing private party work. Spend a couple of years polishing your act there. Then move up to colleges, as well as association and corporate events. After spending five to ten years at that level, you may be ready to start thinking about working theaters. Don't worry about what market to choose, eventually you will find the ones where your act seems to click and you will focus your energy there. I discussed these markets in more detail in an interview I did with Ben Cummings for the Psychic Entertainers Association magazine recently. You can listen to part of it at: http://www.success-in-magic.com/resources.htm Good luck. |

Deano is right, Buy Jim Snack's books. They go thru many, many, many markets for magic and help you decide which one to start with.

I have to jump on Jim's bandwagon. I started to put some of the things I learned into action and saw INSTANT results!!
I am beginning to move into a different area of magic shows and am using what Jim teaches. The leads I am getting are GREAT, I am booking more shows with actually less work. Can't say enough about Jim's SIM program. Peter |

I attended one of jim's tele-conferences on festivals and fairs and have to say it was so well worth my time. Jim knows and understands our world and he can explain things in ways that really will open up your eyes to the possibilities that are within anyone's reach.
His tele-conference alone really helped spark me into a interest in the festival market and it is his words and ideas that have guided me into making a 200% increase in my sales this year alone. My hats off to Jim Snack. Kyle

Wmhegbil. Hehehe I do hope you were only joking with me here. I certainly do far more shows a year than just 2. In fact I often do more shows then that in a day. Guess I am just hooked on this performance art we call magic.
Jim's information helped me do a lead generation campaign for festivals this past winter. I sent out over 100 letters and promo packets to area festivals and park and recreations and received a 26% return rate that turned into paying festival gigs. It amazed me as I was only hoping for a 3-5% return rate and I would have been happy with it. The information Jim shares here as well as in the tele-conferences really helped me learn a lot of great advice and tips which I use every day. Last year I was just getting started into this entire marketing thing and really making an effort to not only learn it but to apply it and to take action upon what I had learned. I was skeptical at first as I am sure many are. I am just amazed how well it really does work. It takes effort and time but it is so well worth it. Kyle

Well in theory if you are doing no shows, then a 1000% increase in shows would still be no shows.
LOL I also like the material on davedee.com |

Dave's material is also very good. There are many good systems out there and information reports that are worth looking into. Read, learn, study and take action.

Thanks every one for your input. I really think I would like to go for the clubs. Not night clubs but rotary and social etc. Now I hear that Jim's program is wonderful how ever I have no buget for it at this time so I am left to asking questions here. My next question is how to actually get started in these clubs. Mailings, phone calls or what? I have been told before I should write a letter to these places. I am not sure exactly how to set up a letter like that. What info it should contain etc? I have a market in mind but any help on how to actually get that first gig would be great. Thanks to all in advance.
