Believe it or not, there were periods in the distant past when magic figured far more prominently in the Gambling Spot than anything we see today.
(there were also better days, but that's not anything that anybody in the forum today has any control over or is responsible for, as people come and go as they feel they have to) We had regular posters to the forum (magicians) who felt compelled to turn every gambling conversation into a magical one. Making things even worse was that they were bl_ody awful magicians to boot. Nothing wrong with discussions about magic, but there are about 40 other forums here on the Café in which to have such discussions, most of them very focused ... and none of them (but this one) about gambling and hustling cards and dice.

I was asked to move this post here, instead of the workers forum.
Growing up, I loved magic, but, due to my geographical location , I had incredibly limited magic resources. Consequently, ANY show containing close up magic was recorded and watched over and over again (often in slo-mo), until I was able to reconstruct the effects. Shows such as worlds greatest magic or hidden secrets were scoured and devoured. I can’t tell you how many times I replayed Sam the bellhop until I could back out the false cuts. Effects such as immaculate connection or the reformation would occupy my free time for days or weeks on end. I don’t remember if I was old enough to even drive when hidden secrets of magic aired. I was fascinated by false dealing in general, and my mind was blown by some guy named Steve Forte. After seeing his center and false dealing performance, I HAD to know the mechanics of how these false deals were done, especially the center deal. I knew of the center deal from scarne on cards and could not believe I was witnessing the vaunted Kennedy Center Deal; after all, it requires at least 8 hours of practice a day for 20 years. I couldn’t believe how incredible Forte’s false dealing was, and I watched it for hours in slow motion hoping to even get a hint regarding technique. And then I saw it.... When he ribbon spread the deck with the 4 kings in the center, I counted the cards above them and realized there weren’t enough to do a center without actually running into the stock before the deal was over. I had been debating if he had lapped the cards below the kings , but then knew this was impossible for the same reason - not enough cards (I know, it’s simple math that a half of a half of a deck doesn’t contain enough cards for a 5 handed game. I was barely driving at the time and had no way to see close up magic in person, so bear with me) Eureka, I had it. There was a back and forth motion as he took the cards back from a spectator as he was placing the deck in his hand. He did a pass. (I suspected a top card cover pass, as I didn’t see the top card flash but couldn’t be sure). While not absolutely certain this was done, I had removed all other possibilities of which I could think. To my mind, If the method was a pass and then bottom dealing, this actually increased my amazement regarding his skill. Enter 52 - there is a pass demonstrated that, to my eyes, had a similar back and forth motion. Case closed!...Er something like that. I later saw Jason England had posted no shifts were used. The mystery returned. Enter 2020, and a friend let me flip through volume 1 of Steve’s book. Having limited time, I went straight to the false dealing section. My jaw dropped when I saw he tipped the method. My respect and amazement for Forte increased to a level I would not have believed possible, both to his cleverness as well as the fact I never saw it (nor would I have ever seen It) in the hours I’ve spent watching the performance and deal. I am awestruck by the depth and breadth of the material and will be buying a set for myself. One could flip the books open to any page, read a few lines, and instantly see that these two volumes are like nothing else in the realm of sleight of hand and gambling. I am incredibly eager to get a set and pour through the other thousand or so pages of the work. |

I haven't read the book and haven't watched hidden secrets in years but from what I remember didn't he just do a bunch of bottoms until he got to his 4 kings. Seemed kinda obvious too.

I would think that most magicians or hobbyists (not the very dedicated of course) would lack the skill or inclination to do this at the level that Forte performed it. Even the almost "wrap-around" Erdnase Grip and the super slick "snap, snap" sound of dealing the cards around the table enhances the somewhat dazzling effect of the deal...for make believe demos card tricks purposes only of course. |
