I was going to buy ROENTGEN BOX then I saw Die Cipher II (ESP Version) and want that. Does the Die Cipher take sleight of hand? Which is more mind boggling? I mean there is a $20.00 difference and I am looking for something that doesn't require sleight of hand and where I can carry around.

My problem with these type of props is that they SCREAM, "BOUGHT IN A MAGIC SHOP!!!" They then become puzzles, and not feats of mentalism.

One of the challenges of using DieCypher II is to integrate it into a routine. Definitely don't have them select a number, then reveal the number... I use mine in a three phase... Mental Epic style routine developed by John T. Sheets. The routine also uses his Mental Clip utility device... which is brass and fits right with the DieCypher. You can get details about the Mental Clip from John at magctch@netscape.net
I highly recommend the routine and the Mental Clip. |

I use Die Cypher (the old version)in a multi-phased routine too. It involves several people around the table, one to hide the die, one to hold onto the box once the die is inside ("Here, hold onto this, I don't want to come close to it!" as I hand it to him myself. It works!)
Another person chooses a card, which is subsequently "lost" in the deck. I toss out six cards at random (?) and spread them in a row. I recap that person 1 chose a number, and person 2 had control of the box. Person 3 chose a card at random. I have someone (person 4?)count to whatever number is revealed on the die, and the chosen card is found to be at that number in the row. Those are the basics. There is so much stuff to do, that the heat is divided, and since the box was out of play early in the routine, it's like "out of sight, out of mind" About the problem of two choices? (Die owners will know) the six card spread eliminates that problem. All you need to do is choose from which end to start counting cards based on the actual location they reveal. David

I had Die Cipher II with the numbers but the ESP version seems more applicable to mentalism. I didn't know Bob Cassidy actually used it. I know some figure it out if they play with it but then again, why let them play with it.

I have Die Cipher I and I'd be interested to learn the routine used by Bob Cassidy. Is it in one of his DVDs?

I use the numer version of Die Cipher in my walk around table magic at restaurants. When I first bought it I thought that it might scream "Bought at a magic shop." and I had a whole story about winning it as a prize etc. I have found that the vast majority of people just accept that I have a brass box with a die in it.
I do a comedy routine where I am always trying to peek at the selection and force my audience to keep pretty close tabs on me. I also have one person put the die in, one person put the lid on, but my last instruction is to put it into my hand. I find that if that is one of the instructions that people just follow along and are very willing to do what I'm telling them. I think the number version is great mentalism and don't see the need to go to a psi version. I get very strong reactions to this piece |

Perhaps I should have held onto mine a wee bit longer before ebaying it.

I get very strong reactions to this piece Also, I find there are more different methods for "reading" the person if it is a number they are thinking of. I always do it three times. First time I count from 1-6, second time they count from 1-6 - that wouldn't be so easy with ESP symbols. And yes Candini - I reckon you let go a little treasure there. I have the Remote Vision Colour Cube as well, but sometimes Die Cipher2 is more practical. Si Just my thoughts. People should do what works for them. I know I will stick with the 1-6 though. |

Hey There Nana,
Just like they all say, all in presentation. I know I forget this at times. Turn a simple card trick (even from penguin:) and leave them in a state of awe. C

I didn't mention this when I first posted here some 4 years ago, but the first thing I did was throw away that awful metal die. With some work, a standard Bicycle white plastic die works fine and looks much less like a magic store gimmick.

The ESP symbol version doesn't look suspicious at all. It looks just like the standard ESP testing units used by any major paranormal university, or any local psi testing center. At least, no spec yet has demonstrated otherwise...
I'm curious how you could use a regular plastic die, though. With Die-Cipher II, at least, the sides and corners of the brass die are precision cut to enable the working. It wouldn't work with a regular die, though I don't have the original -- maybe it is different. Seth |

Read the part where I said "With some work..." Now think fine grain sandpaper and a steady hand on surfaces 2,3,4
