I asked this question in the card section pertaining to cards, but I wonder whether coin workers have a specific outlook.
You are about to perform a sleight that is not invisible--let's say a coin switch or a ditch. You tell a joke. The audience responds. Do you perform the sleight a. as you say the punchline b. as the audience responds c. after the audience responds d. none of the above e. I'm framing the question incorrectly

I agree with Doug on this. If you develop your patter so it involves a natural moment when you’ll make eye with the audience, they will generally make the eye contact without even realizing it, and that is the ideal time to execute the move. It has to feel natural though, almost like an improvised line, though you know it is not.
The best sources I’ve found for learning a about how to plan the timing of these actions in your routines are from the Tommy Wonder “Visions of Wonder” videos, and from the Darwin Ortiz book “Strong Magic.” I can’t recommend these enough for this subject if you want to learn more. Tommy’s “Two Cup” routine still amazes me even though I know exactly what he’s doing now. He’s that good! |
