Is there anyone familiar with Newmann the Great. Reproductions of his posters are on several sites on Ebay and I was interested in purchasing them.
There is very little on the web about him other than the reference to a pamphlet that mentions him and a historical site which basically says that he was a hypnotist/mentalist and anti-semetic. Did he make some comment in a book, to others or was he systematically anti-semetic? |

C. A. George Newmann was a real character. Your best bet for one single source of information is Jim Alfredson's book, "Newmann the Pioneer Mentalist," published in 1989 by David Meyer. There is also an article in the June 1955 (V35 N4) Linking Ring by Marcus Henvit wherein he reminisces about Newmann.

Clay,
Here is a post I had a while back looking for this book, I am looking for a book titled " The Collected Mental Secrets of C.A. George Newmann. The book was published in 1991 and only had a run of 250 numbered copies by Daniel's Den Publication in South Pasadena Ca. If Anyone has a copy or know where I could obtain one I would appreciate it. MemerEye,
For sure you have your work cut out.I personally never heard of him but his book on mentalism looked impressive of what I could see of it. Rennie

Jim Alfredson's book on Newmann is available from Bradbury books - see http://www.bradburybooks.com/history.htm
I also found this little snippet about Newmann on the web: "Christian Andrew George Naeseth (1880-1952), also known as C. A. George Newmann, was born near Kenyon, Minnesota. As “Newmann the Great” he toured the Northwest and West Coast, and “his show of hypnotism, mentalism, and ‘fun and wonders’ meant first-class entertainment.” Newmann also claimed to have collected the largest collection of magic books in the Western hemisphere; he wrote Newmann’s Magical Library." Additional information can be found in: Axel Hellstrom by Al Mann 60 years of psychical research by Joseph Rinn |

In, I believe, Milbourne Christopher's "ESP, Seers and Psychics" there is a poster depicting Newmann doing a blindfolded carriage drive.

Although it borders on trivial, Newmann did not actually write "Newmann's Magical Library," though I believe he did publish it. This little pamphlet was really a compilation of magazine and newspaper articles on Newmann and his library, written by third parties, a good portion of which were written by Loring Campbell and published in the Linking Ring.

There's a great collection of Newmann's posters and playbills in the Library of Congress. Go to: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/mdbquery.html - type "Newmann" in to the search box...

About 40 + years ago, I was doing a school show tour for North Dakota State University. I was still travelling in a station wagon. Lots of Mom and Pop Motels back then.
I arrived in a small town, in central North Dakota one afternoon to find that there was NO MOTEL! I was considering back tracking about 50 miles (and then having to return for an 8:30 program the next morning.) Driving down the "main street", I spotted a Hotel sign. It was an old building with a front porch and rocking chairs! Well, anything to avoid a 100 mile round trip! A room was FIVE DOLLARS!. I checked out the room. It was clean, but very old fashioned! (The door lock had a "skeleton key"! I handed the clerk a $5.00 bill and moved in. (Second floor,no elevator) I never unpacked in those days. I just hauled in the prop case, and my "two suiter". I walked "down town" and had a nice dinner in a Mom & Pop restaurant. No TV. No radio. I cleaned up the prop case. Bored, I opened a drawer in the old fashioned "dresser". A bent wire coat hanger, an old magazine, and, stuck to the drawer bottom, a post card sized "sticker" with the words: "C.A. GEORGE NEWMAN--THIS WEEK--" I checked the other 2 drawers. Yes! Two more stickers! A damp wash cloth soaked the stickers, and I had three collector's items! C.A. had occupied THIS ROOM! (anyone's guess, how many years ago!!!) A couple of months later, I was occupying the "Charlie MILLER Suite" at Magic Inc, in Chicago. I showed Jay the stickeres. "How much?" he "screamed"! "For you, Jasper. They're a gift!" We were friends for life!

There are some original Newman posters and programs popping up on eBay. I own two original Newmans including his famous 1/2 sheet where he is blindfoldied driving a horse and carriage.
Interesting person. |
