I Purchased this from penguin but cannot find a link to the download instructions. Where should that be in the box, thank you?

So I went to penguin to see if they carried this and their website lists it as discontinued. Champagne Supernova is still listed on Matthews site for those who are interested.
I'm waffling between the quarter and half dollar versions. The quarter you can borrow but it seems like the half dollar looks a little better/bigger. A half dollar is the size Matthew uses in the video. I believe the half dollar would be easier to holdout. If one is going to use the sticker version, you might as well carry the half too and perform the larger version? A half dollar is more unusual these days, which only makes the spectator wanting to inspect it stronger at the end, the beauty being (I believe) that is right where you want them to be looking? Did I miss something? Thoughts?

I much prefer the quarter because I perform casually to friends and colleagues and a quarter is a coin I might actually be carrying for something other than a magic trick.
Plus, my hands are smaller so maybe it suits me better but then again my favorite coins are Morgan’s. I prefer to either use “normal” coins which is anything up to a quarter in the US, or “very interesting” coins such as 130 year old Morgan’s. Personally I don’t really care for what I consider to be in between such as new Kennedy half dollars as I find them neither normal nor interesting. But that’s just my own personal preference and I don’t expect anyone to agree. Kind of an interesting topic for a Sunday though. |

Any change is unusual these days. I can’t remember the last time I actually had change on me...or even paid for something with cash for that matter. I have big hands so I prefer the half. Quarter is more common but with all the state quarters in circulation, borrowing a quarter is tough.
Ps if you haven’t been to his site lately, he’s having the biggest sale I’ve ever seen. Insane prices. |

That's very true Eric, which is why it's silly IMO to hear people talking about borrowing a coin or even a bill. I don't expect to be performing this with a borrowed coin but I may ask if they have one on occasion.
Even though I won't be borrowing the quarter but I still just prefer using them. But I also do several routines with foreign coins so I'm not at all opposed to using those also. They can make a routine more interesting as well. It's pretty much all personal preference these days. Really doesn't matter which coin you use IMO. |

Hey, just wanted to give a quick shout out to Alex Hui for his great reviews. Alex, you seemed to come out of nowhere and suddenly you are cranking out reviews like it's your full time job!
But you have become my favorite reviewer and you have leapt to the front of the pack IMO. First, I love that you also have very well written reviews in addition to the video version. Sometimes I don't have the time or desire to sit through a 10 minute video about a magic trick, and let's face it, most video reviewers ramble on way too much yakking about "the channel" and why they're great, etc. So your written review is perfect for that as it saves me a lot of time. But your video reviews are also very concise and to the point and a nice addition. Secondly, you cover a lot of things that others don't in your reviews, and you always seem to be very honest with your feelings, good or bad. It doesn't appear that you are given anything for free to review as some other reviewers are and there is just no way they can be totally honest if something sucks. One side note, in your Supernova review (and others as well) you mentioned the packaging as being kind of poor. But for folks in my age group, we can remember when custom packaging was too exorbitantly expensive and simply not an option for a market as small as magicians. Most everything came in either ziploc bags or standard letter envelopes with a xeroxed label stuck on it. For a few things you might see a small cardboard box with a label on it, but never anything custom printed directly on the box with laser cut inserts. So after growing up with that type of thing for so many years I still see custom packaging such as what Supernova comes in as being pretty darn fancy! Although, granted it may certainly pale in comparison when compared to the packaging of an Apple device. And I do realize that you have to compare it to what is standard today and not 40 years ago. Anyway, keep up the great work Alex! |

Good point. I grew up buying stuff from Paul Diamond. I was lucky to get any packaging at all.

Very good points Eric. I had forgotten about the state quarter thing. That definitely makes borrowing one harder, with the chances of getting one being pretty good.

FYI, the quarter I received is the old school Eagle. But I’m sure they run the gamut of all styles.
Just like I’m sure Alex's bicentennial half was a fluke because there are surely all different dates. |

Kaliix, I got the quarter version and really like it. I ordered stickers and a 3 pack of the extra marker parts but also went ahead and ordered a half dollar full set so I will have a choice in coinage used and at least 1 extra tip (I am not sure if they come with the 3 pack). After playing with the quarter version for a day or two, I am absolutely convinced it (quarter or half) will be added to my every day carry magic stuff.

Well crap, if I wasn't all ready convinced to purchase this...
I'm still not sure what size to get? Once you play around with both, let me know which one you prefer? Maybe it's because my brain has the visual of the sharpie going right through that half dollar. The quarter seems small by comparison, but what do I know. Quote: On Mar 30, 2020, Poof-Daddy wrote:

I ordered 12mm stickers form amazon and they work perfectly. There is a very tiny bit of overhang but that actually works to your advantage. I have been playing with my half dollar version all morning and it works really well and looks very good. The sticker frees up a lot of handling opportunities and looks so convincing. The more I play with this, the more I like it.
Note, because of the coin sliding up and down the sharpie barrel, the writing definitely gets scratched and is starting to wear off in parts. So eventually, you'll be left with a pretty blank sharpie I'm guessing. Matthew sells replacement barrels on his website if that becomes an issue. Probably not a big deal but just thought I would point it out. |

Excellent point about the sharpies markers writing being worn off. I noticed that on Matthew's gimmick in the video.
I wonder if a clear coat of Sally Hansen Hard as Nails on the barrel would keep the writing intact longer? I use this stuff to clear coat the magnetic strip on the back of my debit cards so they don't get scratched and wear down. I wonder if it would work here to save the sharpie barrel text, or is the clearance tolerance so tight that it would impede the coins movement along the barrel? Food for thought? Great thought/question. I don’t think I’m giving too much away in saying that the sharpie he provides has been custom made to have a uniform circumference instead of the normal taper. (That’s not the main gimmick but certainly a nice touch). So there is much less of a gap than with a normal sharpie. Just enough of a gap so the coin slides fairly smoothly, but not sure gap is big enough to handle clear coat.

I think the most wear on the barrel will be from initial practicing. So once you get it down the barrel should last a while unless you are performing it constantly.
Matthew sells 3 replacement barrels for $12.50 shipped worldwide so stocking up on those isn’t very cost prohibitive so that may be the easiest route. I’d test the hard as nails on a standard sharpie first to make sure it doesn’t cause the ink to smear, and then hope the same ink is used on the gimmick. I would think a thin coat would not affect the coin sliding. But again, probably best to use refills as long as they are available. As Poof mentioned, it isn’t made clear if the barrels include other pieces or not. But perhaps they do because if not I would think they would be offered separately. |

I think you are probably right rowland. Hopefully Poof or Matthew or someone can soon confirm that.
