Spectators are going to recoil from touching your cards (not to mention other objects, like Sharpies). No more having the spectator pick a card, or sign the card, or shuffle, or cut, or deal, at least as long as this thing is spreading at an alarming rate. It’s kind of sad, as there will be less interaction with the audience, part of what makes card magic special and unique.

Common sense and sensibility has to prevail. Any tricks involving your mouth, i.e. Card to Mouth, should be tabled for a while.

Why couldn't you just preface a performance by stating that instead of touching or picking a card, could they just say "stop" when they want to choose a card and show around to the specs the chosen card? I think if people couldn't handle that, they are not going to be gathered in a small (or whatever size) group to begin with. There are also many card effects (and other close up effects) that do not require the audience to touch anything. Let them just sit back and enjoy the show in these hard times worldwide. Also hope for a drop in cases in the not so far future.

It is a much better time for merely think of a card effects, which I prefer anyways. Why? Because they are about a million times stronger with the proper presentation.

The main problem with this virus is people seeing that as a big problem.

Older books had tricks where you put cards in handkerchiefs. How well do playing cards do when you put them in an antiviral cloth/wipe?
Hofzinser's performances started with flourishes and proceeded to tricks where the focus was on a thought of card more than about them shuffling the pack or pulling a card from a spread. For example, everywhere and nowhere was about asking a volunteer where they would like their card to be. The trick to avoid for now is ... sponge balls.

Yeah it sucks, there are still some good effects you could do (e.g chicago opener but putting the card in your pocket and not their hand, for an ACR ask for their name and you write it yourself etc), the issue is also that being close up with the spectators is a problem, if someone in the group coughs or sneezes or even exhales loudly this could pass on the virus. The fact it can lay dormant for a few days yet still be spread in that time is worrying

Timing, how long to perform from "hello" to "thank you" can be significantly changed by procedures, prop changes, reset process, disposal of some items ...

The trick to avoid for now is ... sponge balls. Haha, that made me laugh. Robert Neale's 'Sole Survivor', which involves you and the spectator eliminating cards that represent "villagers" in a town hit by a plague, should also go on the back-burner for the time being. |

Sadly, unfortunately...but the reality is IMHO we're screwed for the next 6 months.
Personally I've had everything cancelled...festivals, events, film,. And now is when it is suppose to get busy after a long winter :-( Even the hobbyists are cancelling there IBM and local magic club events. It will pass....how long...we'll see. I hope things will clear up for the summer. Fingers crossed but I'm not too optimistic at the moment. |

Do what cbharrelson suggests above; that will definitely change card magic (and for the better).
The last thing people should be doing at this point is encouraging others to gather in groups for entertainment.

Merenkov, see the numbers, just the numbers, not the media’s or people’s paranoiac…
But granted we have to adjust to what people think. And maybe all that can at least remind us basic hygienic rules. |

Yes. This pandemic happens to increase exponentially. So what you thought last week or last month will be irrelevant, and our survival could be at stake.
