So I have been on the café almost as long as anyone else but I have never been on the "smooth as silk" corner of the world....

I have a problem.. am looking for a silk say red and yellow that is a bit larger than 12inch and smaller than 18 inch... somewhere there is a 13" square silk made or as it has been mentioned 35 centimeters

I am trying to use the plastic vernet dye tube in new and wonderous ways and my two 18 inch barely fit in the thing at the same time for ultimate and end of routine stealing and hopefully sleeving.

I can barely get a chance to pinch the tube to sneak it away... I get by but a better sized silk will save my life!!! yeah I know 12 inch will work but I have my pride and I want this to be standup so 12 inch might be personally ...er to my inner self...demeaning!
unless I get into the hemming business I sure would like a 13incher if it can be found...

the idea of 13 inch comes from a noted professional who uses the tube effectively as I mentioned above.

you might pm me on this

thanks in advance

You can reduce the size of the silks used OR you can enlarge the size of your dye tube, at least around the middle (give it a fat little belly). You probably don't want to mess with your expensive Vernet dye tube, so consider taking your Vernet and going to your local Dollar Store and looking for a tube into which the Vernet will fit comfortably. It might look like a toothbrush holder to the average person, but to a magician it is a potential dye tube (with a little work and flesh tone paint). You'll find more ideas in The Magic Nook's Dollar Store Magic section - Book 2.

Standard size silks are 9", 12", 15", 18", 24", 36", anything in between you have to re-hem yourself, or go to seamstress and have them do it for you. Most silks have a 1/16" hem. They are hemmed using the French hem. There is an added device which fits on sewing machines to create the French hem as you sew the hem.

Another consideration if is you an find 3 momme silks, that is a looser weave in the silk, and thus can compact more into a smaller space. These are harder to find as most most magicians want the highest quality silks.

I have to say, I have not seen a Vernet Dye tube, but I know most there products are made for children size hands. Why they don't make there products for adults is puzzling.

You have to use the correct tool for the job, as in any project. From your description it sounds like you need a Tape Dye Tube. As this is best for sleeving. It was the standard many years ago, and a favorite of the late great Patrick Page, who made several videos for the handling of the Tape Dye Tube. I have not seen any in recent years advertised. Most likely the easiest to make, with a brass tubing from the hardware store and cloth ribbon of cloth from the Fabric store.

I have several Tape Dye Tubes made by Johnson Products of the gimmick coin creators. They will hold up to 18" silks.

You might want to contact Richard Hughes, he is a silk expert. He can make silks in the size you need.

As the magicians' silk importer, in addition to all the sizes above, I also have 6" and 21" square silk.

For antique props 15" and 21" often work best.

For space problems Real Diamond cut silks may be the solution. (My conversions table at the top of "Smooth as Silk" may help you.)
