Early last year when I filmed my LIVE Act, I also filmed a special project with Penguin that dealt with some of my Marked Card work. Today they have finally announced the release of the project, which they have called ‘Impulse’.
The traditional wisdom is that mind-reading and mentalism should never be mixed with playing cards. Enter Looch, a mind reader and mentalist from the UK who shatters that wisdom with Impulse. Impulse is Looch’s approach to performing direct mind reading with a marked deck of playing cards. In this project, you will learn five professional routines along with all of the details and psychology that Looch uses to destroy his audiences. The routines require almost no sleight of hand and are designed so that even knowledgeable magicians will be unaware you are using a marked deck. If you have never worked with a marked deck before this project will give you the crash course you need to start wrecking audiences right away. If you are experienced with marked cards you will appreciate the layered principles and deeply fooling approach that Looch takes. In addition to the training video, you will receive the Penguin Marked Maiden cards, loved by professionals the world over. This is Impulse by Looch. Effects: Body Language A pseudo poker presentation in which the performer claims to be able to read the body language of their audience. The cards are mixed and shuffled by the audience. A card is freely selected, and then the performer reads the tells to name the card in a completely hands-off routine. Pseudo Mem-Deck The performer claims to be able to memorize an entire deck of cards in just a few seconds. The deck is genuinely shuffled by the audience, then a single unknown card is removed and placed face down on the table. The performer then glances at the deck for a few moments and then is able to say how many red and black cards are remaining in the deck, how many cards of the specific suit, and then the values, finally successfully naming the only card not in the deck which is the one selected at the very beginning of the effect. Tracker The deck is shuffled into a random order by your audience. A prediction is made on a business card and set in the open. The magician and the spectator deal cards in synchronicity, and eliminate cards while making the same actions. The cards are further eliminated in a free and fair procedure down to one card that matches the prediction made at the start. Reaper The performer gets a sense of two of their audience through a couple of innocuous questions and then proceeds to use that information to influence a series of choices. A prediction is made on the back of a business card and set aside. Cards are shuffled, dealt, and randomly chosen, one card for each spectator. The cards exactly match the predictions made by the performer. The Dealer In a demonstration of an audience member’s intuition, they are invited to freely name a random card. They shuffle the deck and then deal down through the cards and eliminating them until only one card remains. This extremely free routine feels totally random but his a diabolical system that makes it feel as casual as washing your hands. You can learn more about it here: https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/13280

Would appreciate your review, IAIN. So far, Dobson's book (thank you, Marion) on the use of a marked deck is my favorite, but I would love to hear that this is good.

Here’s an unedited performance of 2 of those effects. Body Language & The Dealer. Both effects I use professionally at all my shows.

The dealer is a nice effect man, good thinking. The DMC elites compliment it perfectly... probably would be a struggle performing it with most other marked decks

He said he was just playing along and humouring me because he knew it wasn’t possible, yet when he turned the last card over he genuinely couldn’t believe it. DMC’s make the effect super easy to do! If you notice in the clip I’m using them. After that piece of footage was shot I was asked to do the same set with their marked deck and it’s exactly the same. Spend a few minutes with their deck and you’ll be able to read them quickly too! In fact all the performance footage on the download and the instructions were filmed with their marked deck 100% Many thanks 🙏🏼

I do not know if it is included in this release but one of the few effects I perform with playing cards is a marked deck effect described in Looch's The Black Project. It always draws a fantastic response and I use DMC's when performing. Having read the descriptions of the effects in the download, one of the effects sounds very similar to the one I perform and, from spectator reaction, is well worth adding to your repertoire.

Hi Neil! Hope you are staying healthy my friend? Are you referring to the infamous 'Tracker' ? - You will enjoy 'The Reaper' also as that was born out of it.

Very much enjoyed this download. I have been using marked decks a lot recently and 'Impulse' offers some great, simple, yet strong routines to try out and add to the repertoire. Looch's performances were great to watch. His teaching is clear and I like his focus on performance in many of the effects (e.g., Body Language, Pseudo-Mem Deck).
I'll certainly be performing these effects (as soon as we can be socially non-distant again). - Ross

For my money, "The Dealer" was worth the price of admission. I performed it yesterday on a co-worker and he's still talking about it today! Indeed, this effect has a lot of commercial appeal and would seem utterly impossible to a layperson. I've been performing "Tracker" and "Body Language" for several years following Looch's lectures and they are both great. "Reaper" as a spin-off of "Tracker" (for two persons) is also an excellent routine, but so is "Pseudo-Mem deck" which when paired with the Gary Jones and Chris Congreave's "Pseudo Card Counting" from their E-book "The Forgotten" is fabulous. If you performed both effects back-to-back your audience would be 100% convinced that you are memorizing the deck...In short, this download is highly-recommended!
Btw- this was in fact an "Impulse" purchase...Nice job with the marketing Looch! LOL |

Looch - this looks awesome! The demo video you posted was great and I'm excited to pick this up (playing with this stuff will make for a lovely quarantine activity - thank you for that).
Question: is there anywhere where you teach the first trick, where the woman's randomly named card is already on top of the deck? That was a beautiful moment! |

I don’t own either Snaps nor Impulse by Looch but I’m curious if any of the routines from Impulse could be done with Snap photo cards?

I don't own any of Looch's products so I have no idea how he did it.
My experience in magic tells me he might have just been a bit lucky. He asked for a random number between 1 and 10. 7 is picked most often. Since he asked a lady to pick her favorite suit, hearts and diamonds are usually chosen more often the clubs and spades. I would have a 7 of hearts on top of the deck and a 7 of diamonds on the bottom. A hit with either suit. Put a 7C and 7S on either side of the tuck case in your pocket and you have four outs with a different reveal (I kept one card out of the case) with the 7 of C/S. It's not 100% but rather a case of playing the odds with number while having four possible endings with no additional gimmicks and little setup. I'm probably wrong but that is how I would do it. If you hit a seven though, your credibility is immediately established because of the strong instant reveal. Quote: On Mar 26, 2020, j_ryker wrote:

@Kaliix - good thinking on the combination of jazzing and planning. Later on it occurred to me that he was potentially playing the odds with 7 and hearts, but your thinking around covering the other bases is really clever and something I wouldn't have ever gotten to. Thank you for the insight!
And @Looch - if you do have work on that prediction, I'd certainly be interested in learning more - even if it is just jazz and statistics Im sure you've put amazing thought into the subtlety behind it! |

Kaliix pretty much nailed it, I have 7H on top and 7D on the bottom, if I get a Spade or a Club, I automatically go into 'The Dealer'
Glad you enjoyed it!

This is full of solid workable effects, you can tell looch has been working this stuff alot. I've been performing "body language" since the penguin live lecture and its great. I love "The dealer" and the "The Reaper, real stand outs for me. I can't really see anyone being disappointed in this. Big thumbs up from me!
