Don't know Hass' version, but have used Ouellet's version in Close Up-Illusions (1990)now and then the last 30 years (Netherworld). Seems to be similar. But may be some new touches.

A few people have asked how Larry's version relates to Harry Lorayne's "Impromptu Out of This World" so I reached out to Larry Hass. Larry reports that they both start with U. F. Grant's "Nu Way Out of This World" for the first phase and they both do something similar in the second phase, but Larry's handling and psychology in the second phase is different. His work, derived from a piece by Gary Ouellet, uses strong misdirection to cover the barest touching of the cards. There is no perceived "handling" or "moment" at the end, which better disguises the subtlety involved. I'm a big fan of Harry's work and thinking. But when I first saw this a year or two ago, I thought "That's the version for me." It's so clean. The final gambit by Ouellet is great, subtle, and not something I was familiar with. Certainly if you have a version that works for you, you should use it. This isn't meant to take away from any of the other brilliant work on this plot. I'd still encourage you to check this out. I try to study the various paths available. Sometimes it's one small idea and sometimes way more. I hope that helps.

Off topic, but I miss Gary Ouellet. I've been performing his "Finger on Card" for about 20 years and it always gets an amazing reaction!

This is very clearly UF Grant's "Nu Way Out of This World" combined with an element from Ouellett's "Netherworld". This was immediately obvious (to me) upon viewing the trailer for it. Anyone familiar with both will immediately understand all the details upon watching it.
Larry himself has stated this. |

I am just a hobbyist returning after an absence of about 15 years(!) But my opinion is that there is nothing new in LH's version. I had already worked out for myself how to do the first phase if using a shuffled deck. (I didn't know that was apparently the same as Lorayne or Grant).
Here is a video from 2011 of Michael Ammar using exactly the same approach as far as I can see - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v96kQ_xyaH8 He also has a very nice convincer after he asks the spectator to cut off half the remaining cards at 03.00. And a nice kicker at the end when he reveals a prediction. |

I've just watched this again and noticed a subtle detail I didn't before, which I rather like. Larry is the one placing the cards on the piles, not the spectator. Half way through he says he won't even look at the cards from now on. At that point as he "changes the rules" he places the second pair of marker cards. Because HE continues to place the cards, there is no need to explain this. He just carries on and it flies under the radar.
BUT despite this, I still prefer the COSMOS 2 handling |

This is a very solid version of Out of this World, but as Sudo points out it really is just two other ideas stuck together. That seems to be happening a lot recently. It's the sort of thing that used to be reserved for a lecture or an aside in a book, but are now being released as stand-alone items. Not sure it's a great direction of travel.

However, being new to most online stuff, I had no idea of the history mentioned in previous posts. Therefore, I will not get into whether this treatment is different enough to be able to be claimed as a new effect, simply because I don’t have the background to be credible enough to do so. Nonetheless, the move that Ammar makes in the video provided by Nikodemus (at 4.50) is a cracker - it is subtle and “effect changing”. It sets up phase 2 beautifully and is done in the off-beat superbly. I now have the purchase from Larry, alongside the history from the venerable originators, coupled with the (new to me) move by Ammar - to bring together a very decent OOTW. Thanks to all for their collective and individual thinking processes.
