Okay, and here's my review for the third and final "weapon": Echo. This review may sound a little like the review I gave for the first two videos, and it is somewhat similar. Yet again, Dani is taking something and making it so powerful and in the process showing you many, many different ways to utilize it and riffing on a variety of related ideas. Once again, there are effects taught (some very good ones -- and, somewhat hilariously, in the middle of riffing he accidentally comes up with a new effect, and one of the Javiers jokes that he'll need to release that effect, and Dani says maybe he'll do it as a whole book...).
As the description says, what Dani teaches here is basically how to do effects that normally could be done by using a duplicate card... but without the duplicate card. There's a lot of psychology in this video too, and plenty of snippets of ideas that can and should get your minds racing with ideas. The key idea here, unlike in the other two videos, does involve something that is pretty bold. And I think if someone had just described it to me, I wouldn't have purchased this video, because my first reaction is that I could never get away with something so bold. But (again, I'm repeating myself), the masterclass nature of this video has me convinced I could pull this off and, once again, create Dani-level miracles. Like the 2nd video, this one requires practice. There are some moves discussed that definitely require more skill, but nothing I would call knucklebusting. Most of it just requires practice to look natural. Dani himself makes it clear that knucklebusting sleights usually take away from effects, and he's so focused on having everything he does look completely natural that there's no point where you think a "move" is happening. Oh, and I think without even meaning to, just watching this video has improved my top change (that's not even remotely what the video is about, but as I was watching some things I realized that what I've learned here can be applied back to a top change). So, there's a lot to learn from this and the other videos and I'll definitely be watching them multiple times. Sometimes in explaining things he walks through beat-by-beat how things should go to make them look natural. This is really useful (though he doesn't always do this), and tends to go much further than other teachings that just show you "the move." Here, Dani is teaching the concept, the theory, the philosophy, and the choreography to make these ideas work (with practice), and then setting you loose to make use of them. I'll repeat what I said earlier -- I've always loved Dani's work, and I'm usually happy to watch his releases in order to learn from his thinking, but on many of them I walk away thinking it was amazing... but never something I'd use. This set of videos is different, as I'm walking away thinking I can absolutely use all of these, that I might really actually be able to perform Dani-level miracles, *and* on top of that, he's given so many ideas and handlings and effects and ideas for effects that it's inspired me creatively to think about other ways to play around with the concepts presented in all three videos. I'm sure some other folks might not get the same feeling out of it, but my reaction is this is one of my best purchases in a long time in that it's actually going to change a whole bunch of how I do things, and I kind of wish Dani did another set of weapons so I can keep learning from the master. |
