What show did you see him do it? If the watches were found on the snake after he had stolen them, the tv special is called Guerilla magic and it was a muscle pass that made the coin fall up. You can see that he had to get the coin into postion to shoot it up.

Stars of magic is a nice source for the watch steal, but I find the routine a little dated. I don't carry a hankerchief, and neither do my audiences. Now that doesn't mean I just couldn't change the routine to another routine in the book. (Scarne's Copper/silver transpo comes to mind) I think when people see the routine in stars they get discouraged and skip over it.
