Hi,
I'm trying to figure out a system which can very quickly draw a small tablecloth. The idea is to have it vanish as quickly as possible. I thought about mechanic reel, but so far I couldn't find one strong enough. Also, I'm planning to use silk for the tablecloth, to facilitate the pull. Any ideas ? Thanks in advance, Take care |

I believe you are explaining a Close-Up trick presented on a larger table where you are sitting down.
You kick it with your thumb into your lap, as you put the silk in front of the small tiny table, and open the flexible form in the silk as you place the silk supposedly over the table. If you think only a reel will work for you, I have one that should work, it costs $5,000.00, PM me if interested. |

In fact my pedestal table is 35 inches in height, and around 15 inches in diameter.
The table cloth must cover the entire table (down to the floor). I need to find a system to quickly pull the tablecloth inside the leg. That's why I was thinking of a pull, or reel. I'm trying to locate one which could to this. I will be standing during this act. Thank you. |

Just where do you think the reel will be hidden? How big around is the table leg, it has to be able to hold all the workings to pull the foulard.
They have very strong bungee cords that is fast, and industrial reels that hold production line tools so the worker can grab the tool easily and perform his part of the assembly. Drill a hole in the floor large enough to accommodate the foulard. You will never find anything fast enough, you will need some kind of misdirection or cover at the same instant. |

Actually in my idea there will be plenty of space to hide the device and the pulled tablecloth.
This is not an issue regarding the kind of table I'll build. My issue is to locate such an industrial reel. Do you have a link by any chance, or tell me in which branch they are used ? I'll try to find also on the internet. Thanks for the bungee idea too. "You will never find anything fast enough, you will need some kind of misdirection or cover at the same instant." Exactly ! that's what I was thinking and it fits very well my scenario |

Here is an example of an industrial tool reel. You would have to customize it for your need. They are strong and fast. Looks like they call them Tool Balancers now.

The problem isn’t so much the reel but overcoming the start up torque required for a fast vanish. There was a silk vanish that was in a bowl on a silver tray that overcame this problem very elegantly. They had a very strong reel at one side of the tray going through the funneled tube which eventually would contain the silk, And they pulled out an extra 8 feet of line and had it zigzag back-and-forth across the top of the tray. When You triggered the reel, it would start sucking up all of that line building up speed the entire way until it got to the very end and the silk would vanish in a split second. That never would’ve worked the same if you just had the reel going to the silk directly without the slack in it. depending on the size, I would also probably recommend a bungee system rather than a motor or spring loaded reel As the bungee can store more kinetic energy and fire much faster. Good luck on this!

Great tips Ray. I especially like the zig zig set up.

If you do use the slack method with the extra cable zigzag somewhere, always put some form of elastic medium in line next to the tablecloth. Otherwise there will be a tendency for it to snap at the connection point. with a bungee loop there, it will expand the loop and then draw the table clock in very quickly but absorb the shock force.

You have apparently been there before Ray! Good advice to remember.

Ihop, why didn't you share your knowledge, as your post was not very helpful at all. So is it safe to assume that you know nothing about the topic, and have no experience to offer? |
