I'm sorry for you guys who make their living at this. Being a "weekend warrior," my only complaint is I'm not going to get to use my table my wife bought for me.

At least I have my “real” job to fall back on...waiter. Oh, crap. Never mind.
Honestly, I think busking could be more viable than we think once things open up again. People are starved for entertainment and already have a proclivity for old fashioned fun (from the quarantine). I could see smaller 10-20 person crowds being seen as safe. More people will be outside doing some shopping but large venues and movie theaters will still seem unsafe or be closed. I’ve already retooled the act to minimize contact. Also, I’m working on a close up set. Maybe one-off tricks for passerby might work too, just 2-5 people watching. I was really excited for this summer. The goal was to move more into performance and away from waiting tables. We were planning to move from SF to Vegas. Since restaurants are not viable I’m hopping there will be some money to be made busking, one way or another. Thoughts? Eldini |

I believe that it's not a question as to whether or not people are looking for entertainment, it's a question of whether or not they will be able to financially afford it. Sometimes getting a dollar or two out of someone is real difficult! Now with the economy the way it is, they my not be able to afford a dollar or two. Plus with social distancing guidelines and people needing to stay 6 feet away from one another, what will that do for crowd control and will law enforcement step in? Not because of the show but because of the audience. Just things I'm running through my mind.

I agree with Eldini. Not everyone is broke or even hurting financially and many people are in a more charitable mind set to give a dollar or two to others.
You've got an opportunity to adjust your show to the times and challenge yourself. |

People have been carrying less and less cash with them over the past few years.
Now with many places not accepting or at least discouraging cash.....there will be even less people carrying cash. For the summer, most of the festivals and pitches I work have been cancelled. Yes, it may still be possible to go out on the streets and perform magic...but not anywhere near what it has been like the past 3 or 4 decades. It is a 'REINFALL'! |

Will your audience stick around and feel comfortable as the show builds? I just don't believe that this will be the year for street performing. I mean, will you be able to do shows? Sure, you probably will be able to. Will you be able to pay your rent/mortgage, utilities, gas, eat? Who knows - this is uncharted territory and anyone's guess is as good as mine. With that said, a good friend of mine has developed the idea of doing driveway shows. He put together a Facebook group and is documenting how to do it and be profitable doing it. The group is called How to: Driveway Shows - Helping performers during COVID-19 Pandemic. Per our conversations, he expressed that he is doing just as good as, if not better than street shows. If you rely on performing, it's 100% worth checking out!
