Hello again folks!
Well my last post ("Attention Book Collectors") asking a few questions about some history books turned out to be an absolute dud -- I finally had to reply to myself so there'd be at least one reply.... Oh well, those were hard to find books. Here's a question a lot of people should be able to help with 'cause there are a lot of copies of Dr. Albo's books in ciculation. I'd be very grateful for your brief input on this question: For Volume IX ("Additional Classic Magic with Apparatus"), what is written on the VERY FIRST printed page? Does it say: "Additional / Classic Magic / With / Apparatus / Robert J. Albo, M.D. / 1998" or does it say something else? Many thanks in advance for your help! |

Thanks for your reply, Rennie.
The reason for asking is to determine how many copies have the page I described and how many don't. I thought taking a poll of sorts might help. Many thanks for your help, Rennie. Clay |

Clay,
No problem I will check tonight when I get home.By the way my copy of volume 2 of the Albo series belonged to Bing Crosby. I picked it up at a book fair and it was inscribed to Bing and signed by R. Albo. I did call Dr. Albo to authenticate that and he said he used to golf with Bing and gave him the books. So may be worth a few dollars more. Rennie

One of the volumes, "I think" no. 5 was in short supply as the print order was made low "in error".

That's correct, Pete. 500 copies only were done in the first print run for Vol 5. However, Vol. 10 also was done in a first print run of 500 copies. Could you take a peek at your Vol. 9 and let me know what you find?
By the way, I have duplicate copies of Volumes 1-5, if anybody is looking for them, and another Volume 2, 3, and 4. Move 'em out! Rennie: great story and fun provenance! |

Let me know and I will get his phone # for you.Byron does not have a website or e-mail that I know of. Rennie

Thanks for checking, Rennie. Byron's been a friend for 25 years, and has helped me out many a time. In fact, he published my book back in 1981.
Right now, I'm reluctant to split up the run of Volumes 1-5. It should be easier to sell as a group, I think. Hope you understand. I can tell you that the last batch of Volume 5's sold by Byron went for $650 each - not a very kind price I know, but I'm told they went quickly and that was many years ago. Believe it or not, it wasn't until last year that I decided to get the Albo set. Seems like a set comes up for sale quite often, though it's expensive. It's rare to see a volume 5 for sale individually, in part because there were so relatively few printed. Most other volumes had print runs of 1000, so that leaves a bunch of folks without Volume 5. I asked Albo about the small print run and he told me that the book was so expensive to produce that he didn't want to get stuck with a lot of extra copies. If you haven't done so already, you should get Volume 10 - it too had a print run of 500 copies. |

Clay,
I do understand about not selling piece by piece, I am also aware of the price and limited quantity of number 5, howvever someday I will find it at a fair price ( yeh right ).I had been looking for years for Goldsteins Yellow Book of Mentalism, which is also a little pricey, finally located one about 3 months ago at a decent price.Ah the fun of collecting books huh ?By the way what book did you come out with in 1981, anything I may me interested in ? Rennie: thanks for understanding, and yes, patience is a virtue in the collecting game. It is usually rewarded!
My 1981 book was the Historians' Guide to Conjuring, and it was a pictorial guide to books purely devoted to magic history, biography and bibliography. See my "Attention Book Collectors" post in this topic heading. |

I am the Illustrator of Dr. Albo's Classic Magic Series.I illustrated all the Title Pages and Chapter Headings. Albo and I met in 1975. We are currently working on Volume XI. If you are interested, Albo and I are signing the remaining out-of-print books. I will do a drawing in each signed book. Write if interested. Bob Johnson, Magic Artist

Can someone tell me how many supplements make up vol. 8 Classic Magic Supplements?
Also, Dr. Albo did some other soft bound books or supplements. Anyone have a list of those? Thanks for the help. |

Just received my latest Stevens catalog... for those with a little extra change in the couch cushions, Uncle Joe is offering a complete Albo series (1-11 plus "hard to find supplements in Volume 8")for sale. Interested parties are encouraged to call or email.
If it's any indication of asking price, "Joe's Easy Buy Plan" is also mentioned!;)
