"COVID-19: Ford to announce shutdown;...

Etches raised the possibility of going even one step further and enacting stay-at-home orders if residents don’t show greater restraint to halt the growing spread of COVID voluntarily.

'That just takes away a little bit more of the choice from people, and that is one of the things that may happen if COVID levels continue to rise.

But we need to do all we can to turn this around, until we see the vaccines providing the kind of protection that we foresee.'

Ottawa Public Health, Etches noted, has been reporting new daily cases in the triple digits this week, while the infection rate has doubled since Ottawa was moved from the orange to the red zone two weeks ago. 'So that has clearly not worked.

'Our health-care system is stretched. Cases are rising, hospitalizations are increasing, the testing centres are maxed out, and our case management team is no longer able to contact trace as we have through previous resurgences.'

Meanwhile, variants of concern in Ottawa’s wastewater have soared, from just 10 per cent of detected COVID on March 20 to 50 per cent five days later, indicating especially high transmission levels."

"From green to red in a week, eastern Ontario region serves as warning bell for others"

I'm in Renfrew County- we're surrounded by Lanark/Leeds/Grenville, and Ottawa- Guess these guys hadn't heard from the premiere yet, this evening. They're going to move us into orange, they think. While pretty well stating they know we need more than that:

"Renfrew County’s top doctor says there are many factors compounding his worries, including 14 positive variant cases and the proximity the Ottawa;...

Renfrew County Paramedic Chief Mike Nolan, whose team does a majority of the COVID swabbing in the area.

'The numbers of people showing up at swabbing clinics has really exploded over the past week or so," says Nolan. "The days and weeks to come I think should be of concern to all of us knowing that the variant is here in Renfrew County.'"

That's troubling to hear, Laurie. I would say here in NYC, it looks like contrary to where you live, we're on the downside of the curve now; deaths are down and vaccines for those over 50 are readily available. Most people I know in my age group have been vaccinated.

I would say, personally, I am concerned about the return of unrestricted indoor gatherings--gyms, bars, restaurants. If done carelessly, it could be a problem. Schools, too, require thought and resources to open properly. I think here in NYC, there *has* been attention to doing it properly (strangely, what had been a real issue is the tension between the governor and the mayor, political rivals, undercutting each other. Now that the governor has been weakened politically due to ongoing scandals, paradoxically, the city government's response is more unified and consistent.)

Broadway theaters are set to open in September. While I really feel for the actors and designers and technicians who have really suffered for a whole year, to me this is the most tricky area--movie and legit theaters. I don't see how their business models will allow the audience or performers to socially distance. It will be interesting to see how creatively this is all handled.

Thank you for your response, Jack.

"Groups representing Ontario's doctors, nurses and hospital administrators are calling for stronger measures to slow the growth of new infections.

Allowing variants to spread further 'unethical,' ICU doctors say
A group of 153 ICU physicians issued an open letter to the government Thursday urging stricter public health measures.

The letter warns that the doctors are seeing younger patients — including parents of school-aged children — and entire families sickened by the more contagious coronavirus variants of concern.

'Even if we had unlimited ICU capacity, allowing these [variants of concern] to spread exponentially is unethical,' the letter says.

'As ICU doctors, we are the last line of defence, and we are ringing the alarm bell. Please hear it.'...

...'The situation is the most serious that it's ever been,' said Anthony Dale, president of the Ontario Hospital Association. 'Our critical care system in Ontario is not built for a mass casualty event like this.'

The record-high numbers of COVID-19 patients in intensive care are a result of the fact that the new variants of the virus are tending to make people sicker than the original strain of the virus.

A significantly greater proportion of people getting infected in Ontario's third wave is ending up in intensive care than at any point in the pandemic."

The question is how do you hide from a virus?

Perhaps less lies and political bs would have helped from the start.

I had hoped that a silver lining of this horrible thing would be for us to see others with whom we disagree as PEOPLE. Nope. Not even close. We're all in this together, and still most don't see it.

Laurie please stay safe. I hope the best for you and yours. We are all in it together!

Thank you, Danny. Appreciated. Smile

My Dad's sister passed on last night (April 1, and I'm not convinced that's a coincidence- black irish Smile ). She was 92, which she may not appreciate me saying, and I haven't been visiting as much as I'd like the past year because of Covid- didn't want to expose her or my mother. She'd been in hospital the last month with both knees fractured, and overall declining health, naturally, but I didn't visit her, for the same reason. She was vaccinated on admittance to the hospital, fortunately, but my Mom, who just turned 78 (March 23) hasn't been yet. Living in an apartment building further complicates the situation, so it's a stressful time, obviously, for everyone.

Today our granddaughter was two and the only people who came to her party were her grandparents.

Yesterday we went to a funeral and met an old lady who had outlived her three daughters.

Such is life.

"Ontario has declared its third state of emergency since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and will be implementing a provincewide stay-at-home order as of Thursday.

'...right now, above all else, our plan is to get needles in the arms and protect our hospitals. That's why, today, on the advice of the chief medical officer of health I'm declaring a state of emergency.'

...In addition to the closure of most businesses, the stay-at-home order makes it illegal to leave a place of residence, except for essential reasons such as work, school, trips to a grocery store or pharmacy and for health-care reasons.

'To boil it down as simple as possible, folks please stay home unless it is for an essential reason,' Ford added."

I'm confused about something.

A vaccine with over 98% efficacy is given to health care workers. Why is being a health care worker so scary?

I get the job is not fun. No doubt seeing masses of sick and dying folks is horrible. But I'm asking about risk now.

It is NOT like the beginning with no vaccine and no knowledge and we are acting as if it is.

By "protect our hospitals", they are referring to the need to keep hospitalizations below capacity so as to prevent patients from facing denial of life saving treatments.

Discussion of getting needles into arms refers to the public and many vulnerable demographics that aren't yet vaccinated. The variant strains of the virus are spreading more rapidly, outpacing vaccination and therefore leaving many susceptible to what are considered more contagious and dangerous strains. In Canada. Not sure about other areas since I haven't checked global updates recently.

For those of us who haven't been vaccinated, it is very much like, and, even, worse, than it was before vaccines, fwiw.

"Canada has emerged as one of the only countries in the world with significant outbreaks of three different variants occurring at the same time — turning us into a giant experiment on the world stage."

Oh they are speaking to overwhelming the system. THAT makes some sense thank you. I missed that.

Because when this all started it WAS very scary for the workers themselves!
