Can anyone recommend a production box that will comfortably fit a hardcover novel? I'm hoping for something relatively colorful. I've seen some of the Ickle Pickle offerings (e.g. Ultimate Production Box) but wanted to know if there were some other options I should consider. Thanks in advance.

I would encourage you to explore other ways to produce a hardcover novel that don't involve any kind of box... such as the appearance from a handkerchief (large), or from a waste basket (imagine tearing up papers and dropping them in a waste basket and then dumping out the book). Another solution is a small pocket-size book that grows into a large hardcover novel. You could also show an empty gift bag and make the book appear inside it). Think like a magician and you will come up with your solution.

If you want a reputation maker, Carisa Hendrix's Book Production is amazing.
It is taught on her Penguin Live lecture: https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/12563 |

Maybe a U.F. Grant Temple Screen would work? It has a large bag load chamber. You could also decorate the screen so it matches your book theme. It also does not cost much and fairly easy to find.

It's a dream bag, but with an object that makes sense. (and more dynamic production, having the object "fall" into the bag.) Bold move at the end. The apparent free choice of a book from a list handed out to a spectator was also a bold gambit. That was really great. |

Grant's cardboard production box (found in both Tarbell and in Grant's "Victory Carton Illusions") would work to produce a rather large, thick hardcover book . In Grant's version the box is a plain brown cardboard carton, but it could be decorated more like a gift wrapped box if you wanted something colorful. (Carisa Hendrix's book production with the bag could be a more colorful gift bag if desired.) Another source for the U.F. Grant Carton Production is in Dan Harlan's Tarbell video series available from Penguin: "Tarbell 82: Stage Productions". If you look at the video preview on the Penguin site , you can see a quick clip of Dan Harlan performing the carton production. Another easy-to-make production box is also found in the Mark Wilson Course on Magic on page 376-377 , called simply "Production Box". (requires the use of draped table.) Again, this could be decorated as a gift-wrapped box to be more colorful if that is what you want. Jim Gerrish's suggestion to produce a book from underneath a cloth that has been shown empty is also a good suggestion. There are a number of ways of doing that. Think bottle production or bowl of water production. I would say that in this case eliminating a typical "magic box" prop (such as a mirror box or black art type of production box) is the way to go. Here's an idea that occurs to me: if you know what a "daylight seance" gimmick is , use one of those to produce a book on a book stand. On a table there is an empty book stand (like this: book stand ) , the magician holds the cloth in front of the book stand for a few moments and when the cloth is taken away there is an open book seen on the book stand. I would think the simplest way would be to have the book in a servante behind a draped table , transfer it to the book stand under cover of the cloth. Most book stands have some sort of clamps to allow the book to lay flat in an opened position on the stand , but you could gimmick the book in way that allows it to lay flat without having to move clamps into place ... some older books with a well worn spine will lay flat with no problem , no clamps needed. |
