THE TRICK: http://www.magicshows.ca/products/hand-m......deck.htm
THE NUTSHELL: This is the best piece of magic that I have ever seen. THE REVIEW: I am a firm believer in saving the best for last, so I’ve been waiting quite some time to write this review. The Marked Bicycle Deck is my favorite trick out of all the gimmicked and ungimmicked tricks I know. From the fact that this is done with a Bicycle Deck to the beauty of the markings’ subtlety, this is perfect. If you ask any spectator who I have ever done magic for what they’re favorite trick is, they will probably describe this one. I mark almost every deck I buy, because the system is so incredible. I have gotten so good at reading them, that I can announce the spectator’s card without being accused of even looking at the cards. I’ve had the most intelligent people burn these cards for up to fifteen minutes – this trick has not been exposed once. Despite possible misconceptions, the marked deck is quite examinable. I have put a great deal of time into the making the marked deck the best it can be, and now come to the conclusion that it is absolutely flawless. I bought the marked deck at a local magic shop, and have seen it nowhere else. I’ve seen marked decks of course, however I’ve rarely come across any that use the Bicycle brand, which is shocking because I feel like it is the brand itself that really sells the trick. If the spectators start picking apart the deck for too long, or ask if it is fake, I can just say, “Guys, it’s a Bicycle deck; you can pick ’em up at almost any store.” Believe it or not, this ends the conversation. I have never found a gimmick so useful because it had that specific brand name; Bicycle has always just been a preference. I see one marked deck they sell here at Penguin (the European Reader Deck?) and cannot be bothered. When you perform an effect of this power, you can’t have anything out of the ordinary that doesn’t back it up. This is why Bicycle works. A huge plus of the marked deck, is that the magician never touches it. In my experience, the level of amazement for a spectator is directly linked to the magician’s handling. In the time machine, the selling-point is that you never go near the dial. With the Pro PK Kit, a key point is that you never touch the coin. Tricks like Out of this World may be out of this world, but because everything happens in the magician’s hands, you are bound to receive more suspicion and less reaction. I give the deck to my spectator, stress that I will never touch it, leave the room, have them pick a card and throw it on top, come back into the room, and reveal their card in a minute-long routine that I have refined through the years. I have received the most incredible reactions I have ever received in my life, greatly because I never touch the deck. As I just mentioned, you can go crazy with the presentation on this effect. If you want to convince your spectators that you can read their minds, now is your chance. This is not the trick to just announce the card and move on. I always close with the marked deck and play it up big time. I don’t think I build any trick up more. Another thing to remember is that the marked deck, like the stripper deck, has a gimmick to it, but is otherwise normal. The Invisible Deck is great, but you can only perform a single effect with that deck. The mentalism involved in the marked deck is equally direct, and the deck can be used like any other for the rest of your routine. There are no deck switches necessary. The price, at least the price of twenty bucks that I got this for, is more worth it than you can possibly imagine. What you must remember is that you are not only paying for this deck, but for the secret system that you can apply to any bicycle deck you own. My original marked deck is long gone, but there have been many, many more since then. If I did not receive any deck with my purchase, and only the instructional manual, it would still be worth well over twenty dollars. So just what is wrong with the Bicycle Marked Deck? I submit there is nothing. And, I mean, it is my last review, how can it not be a ten? Seriously, I am shocked that the Bicycle Deck is not only more sold on the market, but also a lot more popular. I feel that this is the best invention that magic has ever seen, and it is somehow left in the shadows. I have seen a marked Bicycle Deck sold online, so I highly recommend running a search. Because this is the best investment that I have ever made, and it has proven time and again to be flawless, I give it a 10. |

Hi!
what do you mean with "the magician never touches it"?!?! how do you read the mark? do you stare at the card while the spectator holds it? often specs take the card by covering the back of it... thanks for your answers! andy |

Or from the ever-reliable SUM or DECRAM decks?
Lots of marked bicycle decks out there, some sloppy, some less sloppy. Anyone with the eyesight of someone over, say, 45 years of age may find themselves needing binoculars if they want to use old-fashioned hand marked (pre-Lesley) bicycles. |

Ted Lesley markets the decks on his website, and I think Hocus Pocus does as well. Given the choice of that or the Boris Wild deck, I choose the Lesley system. It is more simple and direct.

There is no better investment for anyone interested in MD than "Marked for Life" by Kirk Charles. This book tells you all you need to know. And it costs only $12. Highly recommended.
Here is what an ad for the book says: "Tips, Tricks and Tactics for Any Marked Deck! The marked deck-Most have one, yet so few actually use one. Full-time professional Kirk Charles shows you how the marked deck you own can be one of your most valuable tools. And if you don't have a marked deck, he gives you all the information you need to choose the one best suited to your puposes. A high-quality paperback with 100 pages of clever and valuable information. Softbound, 100 pages." And by the way: you will also learn the "Farmarx" system highlighted in the magicshows.ca ad.

The Demon Deck from Mentalism Unlimited is really good, subtle but very easy to read markings. Tells you the card itself plus the card above it. Easily seen from spread or riffle. Subtle one way deck too. On Bicycle 'design' but not actually Bicycle cards.

Although I think production is suspended at the moment. Very good product though! Of course people will see the markings if you let them know the cards are marked by doing a dumb trick, but otherwise I think the markings are pretty well invisible. |

The Demon Deck is also available from time to time on Ebay. It comes out of the pack set up in the BCS system. You might want to get a Bicycle case to put it in.
