In the sport of boxing, it is said that “styles make fights.” Along those lines, there are many styles in magic that are quite effective. Some magis like to be up and about, some like the outdoors, some are hobbyists that like learning from a multitude of sources, while some like to just sit and deliver. This guy learned the craft from his dad, who was a really good closeup man himself. He taught him all the nuances and moves that makes magic even more clever & magical.

In this one, he shows a clever old coins across. The moves are so smoothly done that if you were sitting right next to him you’d see about as much as you see right here. Smile I remember learning that right up close one night on a cruise in Boca Raton, Fla., sitting next to another outstanding card & closeup man, Bill Malone. Man guys like this are something to see up close as it just shows you what we’re all in search of as to the art no matter how difficult or simply put…”pure perfection” is what all the practice is really about.

Here’s a good example of all that from a guy that’s been doing it just this way for a really long time. I believe Doug Conn way above shows you a bit of this in a similar trick, but it’s good to see how different hands handle things differently the same… The effect is a nice one here, but again it’s the overall delivery that makes it sing… Smile

This has been a really good thread.

Mike Gallo isn't talked about enough!

Not only is he one of the smoothest ever, he is one of the most creative too!

Here's another great one.

I like Mike Gallo’s style. He reminds me of many guys I knew growing up in Western New York.

He’s so matter-of-fact in his presentations you’re completely unaware there’s any misdirection going on. This must harken back to his days performing magic while tending bar.

He talks quickly and sometimes stumbles over his words. Typical of many Western New Yorkers. Probably exactly how his father, Lou spoke. I love it. Makes me a little homesick.

If you’ve never watched his Magic Castle lecture, it’s a must.

Thanks for the links.

There are so many good coin magicians from around the world. Here’s another guy you don’t hear much about but he’s quite good, as good as anybody and honestly better than most. And with not only interesting magic but also interesting patter. His pace and timing are impeccable and the moves are precision. Quite a few uniquely nice moments in there. What do you think? Smile

It never ceases to amaze me how a little bit of narrative (I don't mean the usual play-by-play of "it's here, now it jumps over there!") can completely change the feel of a routine. Watching that with and without sound is like night and day.

You don’t ever want to forget this guy, he was really good and before coming up with all the brilliance he showed through his works, well, he started out with good old SOH. I remember him on a visit to Cali long ago. A really nice guy, down to earth sorta fella with just remarkable chops. He came to create a lot of gimmicked stuff, but it all came out of his playing with SOH first, finding the impossible and then figuring out how to make it happen with a little extra. Smile And as usual, people like this have many stories to them, many of which involve the recognition and greatness of others, even helping them along their way. Sometimes it’s just best to start at the beginning of a journey to better understand how one gets from here to there, that might include more than just you… If you got a couple minutes, listen in on how brilliance comes to show brighter & brighter between two very different kinds of coin men… Smile

I have had a ball over the years with SOH, the moves, the routines, the overall power of creativity it gives you. I have especially had a good time with this move, just so deceptive and was quite a rage years back used in the WV. It’s a great move to learn and get good with and fun to play with in different ways. I’ve never seen anyone use it more effectively than Eric Jones, man, he had such finesse with this move, especially in his excellent version of Karate Coin, “Tai Chi Penetration.” Smile

Anyway, here’s one way I find to be a nice little set. I really like the overall casualness of the vanish, but not the production so much. And that’s where I use my own production, my own creativity as you may want to use yours. I know a lot of folks detest the youth on YT as to magic, but some of those kids are quite good, truth be told. I must admit that I have picked up a thing or two over the years watching them. Yeah, quite a bit of it is schlock but the more serious ones bring about some good pieces sometimes, sorta like panning for gold, sometimes you get lucky. Smile This is a good one to learn from for a little immediate magic on the go…Give it a whirl and see for yourself. Smile

Happy Summer!

I know, I know, supposedly coin guys don’t like card magic and vice versa, but that’s not always true. I happen to like both but just was a bit better at coin magic. However, once I played a bit more disciplinely with cards, I became quite a bit better at them, sometimes even surprising myself. Smile Today, I can do a good little bit of it and like to do some within all my coin magic stuff. It breaks the monotony a bit and gets people thinking another way before you might end with yet another coin trick.

Anyway, I like the variety of it and this guy, once again, is just so darn good at it that he deserves an encore here again and again for all his up close deception with seemingly anything he touches, cards, coins, whatever!… Smile I remember my old boss use to say to me whenever we had corporate dinner engagements all over NYC, I would always order a cheeseburger. She would say, “You really need to expand your palate.” Smile And I’m so glad I did, as there’s a lot of differently delicious foods out there. Smile So, yeah I know it’s the old coin forum, but you just gotta tip your hat at such excellence anywhere you see it done so well…Simply delicious!

Thanks Riz, always a pleasure to share good things with good people. Smile

And dj, that is indeed a quite stunning Coin in Bottle, just so elegantly done. WOW!

Like I say here often enough, there’s an awful lot of great magic out there beyond your own backyard, from the big, small, and all of us. Smile

A few years back now, during the great quarantines, there were those, a few that used magic as a salve to better the moments. This guy did a trick every day for a good while. What a wonderful thing to do, and in doing so, we found yet another clever worker, that of closeup and stage. It’s always fun finding the best in us all. By his efforts, he showed an indelible spirit to not only keep his self up but to also help others through some rough times we all shared. Here he just does a little bit, but sometimes all you need is a little as it can sometimes go an awful long way. Smile

Thanks for the question Anthony, and yes, this seems to be a small bit as to the opening of his (Denis Fabre aka “corneille”) post on the Shigeo Takagi Matrix here…Actually the opening bit. And again, “Just Excellent!”

What’s really cool there is his audience management while completely surrounded. This is not usually the case as to larger audiences such as stage or parlors, at least not normally as to coin magic. I remember long ago experiencing this in such a situation with Mickey Silver in a restaurant completely surrounded sitting at a table. It was quite unique as I was able to watch the focus all around us from the inside, not as the performer but more so as a sorta fly on the wall. It was amazing! And this posted video is the same sorta strong magic and overall amazement I once felt from a very unique perspective with another wonderful performer.
