I remember his store had more magic-per-square-foot than any other magic store in North America; well, in Chicago anyway.
He truly loved magic and magicians. Julie |

Almost every Chicago magician has a Mr. Ash story that is hilarious. I have hundreds. The guy was truly unique in performance as well as in life in general. He and Bonnie his wife were where I started in magic. I literally bought my first book, trick and video from Mr. Ash. (I still use the Color Changing Deck from "The Magic Book" by Harry Lorrayne in every close up performance.)
The story that sums up Mr. Ash to me is the following. There was almost NOTHING that he would not buy, and horde. No joke. At one point there was almost nothing at a garage sale, estate sale, or whatever he wouldn't buy for a dollar. Once he took this theory a bit far as he bought a LOT of pants, coats, shirts and such from the 1920's or so. I mean just kept them in the garage for a decade or more. They came to shoot the Untouchables and lo and behold guess who has just what they needed? He made a killing on the deal. He was a wonderful person, a good friend and a great magician. I don't know if there is video of him online but if you get a chance to see some don't pass it up.

There is video of him, check the Vimeo link in the OP. A great little documentary that gives you a good flavor for Mr. Ash.
I usually go to Chicago in July for a work conference (would have actually been flying out there tomorrow but sadly cancelled this year) and was aware of his shop but never made it out there, unfortunately! |
