I've been watching Steve Forte's Gambling Protection series and theres a move on there called a "hop" that nullifies a cut - does anyone know where I can find more information on this move? It looks pretty nifty.
Anyone have any other favorite methods of cut nullifying? |

The hop is also called the shift by cheats and the pass by magicians. There are countless passes and shifts and other ways to nullify the cut. Some creative ways of nullifying the cut can be found in Card Control by Arthur H. Buckley. The cut can also be negated at the card table by having an ally positioned to cut on the cheat's deal. The cheat can create a brienf (such as a small bridge) and the ally then cuts at the brief.

If you have Steve's videos then you probably have the single best source for hopping a deck that exists right now. Much of what you'll see on that tape isn't so much the actual mechanics of the move(s) but rather the tempo and rhythm that Steve moves at.
I'll second the Richard Turner tape(s) as a good secondary source. Other sources include: Modus Operandi by Jack Carpenter. The Ehler's Shift is quite nice and if you master it, you'll be one of the few who have. In Marlo Without Tears, Ed Marlo has what is essentially the draw shift (Richard Turner is one of the people he mentions showing this to). See pages 78 - 84. The Expert At the Card Table has some great stuff in it regarding the shifting of the cut and what to do if you can't improve on a given method. Pay close attention to His words, the good news begins on page 95. Jason

The "changing the moment" line is on page 96. I'm not sure where the other line is from, but it certainly isn't from pages 67-68. Can you perhaps go back and find it? I'm curious now. Jason Okay. I figured it out. You were looking at a Dover copy of Erdnase. Shame on you. A real Erdnase has 205 pages, not 130. The second of your quotes is from the section entitled, "The Player Without An Allay" and can be found on page 111. Jason I'm just giving you a hard time about the Dover copy. But please, go spring the eight bucks for a Powner paperback from any of a million magic dealers. It's the right thing to do.

To all who may be interested, there is some good news from Expert at the Card Table page 96. "The shift has yet to be invented that can be executed by a movement appearing as coincident card table routine; or that can be executed with the hands held stationary and not show that some maneuver has taken place.
The above statement is no longer true, I know this to be a fact because I invented it; I call it the McMullen Infinity pass. Any pass that you can do normally can also be done using this pass. I don't practice the move like I should to show it perfectly because it's obsolete to me and I don't practice what I don't need. I know that if I gave this idea to the magicians that they would perfect it to the degree where it could be shown flawlessly. I taught some magicians this move already sometime ago so it might already be out. The Hands Are Never Stationary The hands is never suppose to stay stationary when playing with a group of card players due to the fact that after the back man cuts the deck you have to reposition your hands towards the first man so you can deal him his first card; this is when the shift happens. The logic of knowing this fact along with the players knowing this fact is the perfect time for this shift to be executed. A Note to **duncan: This is another move, which I modified from the magicians and made it to fit the card table. It was suppose to be posted in the Genii Magazine but I didn’t like how the individual who was going to back me, wrote up my move. He wanted to be the writer presenting it and didn’t even know how to do the move nor explain it properly so I bowed out. Your Friend Doc |

Yeah - I figured out that the shift was a pass, but I meant the actual on the table hop where the shift happens one handed as the packets are collected.

You need to clarify yourself when talking about hops. Shifts or hops are mostly done with two hands. Yes there are occasional one hand hops that work but next time be specific.
Your Friend Doc P.S. Most one hand hops are done playing a head-up game. |

One of the better books about the classic "expert at the card table" is the one called Revelations.
This is the one that was put out using Dai Vernon's opinions on the moves. Vernon adds many interesting things. If your interested in the pass the shift or the hop it is very good reading. Also check out Vernon's Ultimate secrets of card magic. It has to very good table passes in there. Also several other passes as well. I hope this helps...

This shift, is that one that you might consider teaching others? If so, I would be more than interested. With Respect Samuel

Anyone know any place to view a tablehop? that's not like a shift, that's a shift done before the pack is assembled... I think!?

Now I am really confused. Can someone explain the difference between the hop, shift, pass, and now the shuft. I see the name,
Rod the Hop. Does he get his name from the hop being used here? |
|||||||||
Samuel Special user Norway 831 Posts |
Shuft is misspelled - prob. supposed to be shift.
Hop is when you pick up the deck from the table, and then the shift has already been done (I think). Shift & pass is the same - the two halves reversed in the hands. Please correct me if I'm wrong
