I don't know when it was released, but this is new to me, and I couldn't find it on the Magic Café.

Description:

Swindle by Steve Cook is a super cool influence effect ideal for opening your performance.

As usual Steve has created an easy to follow, simple to execute Mentalism effect that packs small and plays BIG!

We all know the power of a simple 50/50 choice but Swindle feels like so much more.

Add Peter Nardi’s routining to Steve’s fantastic method and you know you are on to a winner!

Swindle is super easy to do and ultra-deceptive. Comes complete with props and full video instructions.

As a little demonstration of using influence and human psychology you introduce two small tins (one white and one black)

Basic Script

“In life we all make decisions, each decision becoming a small journey in the human mind (there are usually two steps to every decision) and even though we decide on a certain outcome the route to get there is usually not a straight line.

In fact I am going to ask you to choose either of the two boxes. You may choose the black which is a slick Matt black and to be honest the one that everyone seems to choose (in fact if I was given this choice that is the one I would go for) or the nice shiny white box, which attracts the eye and to be honest is closer to you so probably easier for you to grab. Anyway the choice is yours BUT I will tell you this I know exactly what steps you will take and I have predicted which box you will end up with”

Your spectator follows your instructions and selects a box. The box is open to show it contains a small slip of folded paper (the note reads I knew you would have this box). You state that the other box also contains a note but when you open it the note inside is actually a £50 note!

May be performed in any language

Use any currency

Nothing hidden inside the boxes (they are truly empty at the end)

Super easy to perform

The perfect Mentalism opener.

Powerful, interesting and fun!

I ordered and received this. I don't know if I like it or not yet, to be honest.

I think to be honest, it is important to know that this is a two way out on a 50/50 choice. Before I received this, I thought it was going to be more of a free choice. I was hoping it was going to be some new clever method along the lines of Decisions by Mosique, which is an amazing 50/50 method that can be repeated over and over. In fact, Decisions is designed, in my opinion, to be done over and over as the participants will never figure it out and it gets more and more impossible the more you repeat it.

This one, on the other hand, should not be performed a second time because it would be obvious how it is done. In fact, depending upon their selection, either the trick is very good (for a 50/50 trick), or a bit sketchy from the beginning.

I think one of the problems with 50/50 tricks is that by their nature, they aren't that impressive unless you can do them over and over.

When I purchased this, I thought it was something that I could do in a set as sort of a callback, ongoing trick, but I realize that you can't do this trick two times in a row, because the method then becomes painfully obvious.

It seems to me that a 50/50 trick is about as powerful as a pick a card trick in a deck of two cards.

What I thought this had going for it before I received it was that in this case, one tin has a message note and the other has a twenty pound note. It's still just 50/50, but the currency ups the ante. However, for it to be great magic, I'm thinking one would have to do better than 50/50, especially if they make the less desirable selection first, and it's still magical, but a little odd.

I thought that perhaps the tins were gimmicked so the currency note could come out of either tin. Not the case. These are un-gimmicked tins.

I'm curious if others have this, how do you think this could be made stronger than just a one time 50/50.

Thanks.

Also, now that I have seen this, it seems to me that it would be stronger if it was two envelopes instead of two tins.

In fact, I might do that in my wallet, with a Monopoly 100 in one and a real $100 in the other. That way, I can tell someone that there is a money note in each of the envelopes, and one of them they get to keep. I might even say: "I am going to give away 100 dollars". In the end, one was a Monopoly 100 dollars and the other was a real 100 dollars. The patter could include something like: "In life, there are things that are real and things that are fake. Just watch the evening news."

Now that I have played with this idea a bit, I'm happy about my purchase as it inspired me to come up with something similar but different.
