We hear so much about the food we eat and the way it affects us. Do any of you out there have any diet tips for forming a better food-mind relationship?
Do you find some foods are better for a healthy mind? do some foods give you the edge you need? Is a diet of 'mind food' really worth following. By 'mind food' I mean foods that people take on the assumption they increase mind power! Do all of the additives in modern foods disrupt the thought process, and in what ways? Thoughts welcome!!!

If the saying is true, that "you are what you eat," then I guess the lesson is: Stay away from jerky!

A few good things eaten with LOTS of bad things will help very little.

All I can note is what works for me and I truly believe that individuals have different reactions to foods and meal make-ups.
I've learned that if I stick to 6 small meals of about 300 calories each spread throughout the day, then I'm never hungry as I eat before I'm hungry and I'm never sluggish as a large meal doesn't then bury me. I avoid the sugars and starches and stick to high quality protein, a moderate amount of fat, and vegetables and low glycemic fruits which keeps the blood sugar in check and maintains awareness. Again, eating is like religion so this may work for no one other than myself, but the strategy has really paid off in increased mental awareness, eliminating hunger, and provided some weight loss as a side benefit. I do break all rules when celebrating anything. |

The thing that works for me is to not diet. A diet implies that at some point you are going to go off it. Unless you retrain your eating habits, you will go right back after going off the diet. I spent a year and a half changing my eating habits. It's not an easy nor quick thing to do. The thing is to not deny yourself anything, unless it puts your health at risk (like a diabetic drinking a sugar laden soda). So, if I want a chocolate chip cookie, I have only one instead of half a dozen! Now, almost three years since I've accomplished this, I find it amazing at how little junk food I eat now, as opposed to then. When I search for a snack, instead of potato chips, I go for fresh fruits or veggies or cheese and crackers. I will eat the occasional fast food meal, but that's a rarity. Now, I will admit that I do have one weakness....Dr. Pepper. My personal trainer, when I had one, tried like everything to get me to give up carbonated beverages, but I told her I refused to give up Dr. Pepper. So, she talked me into reducing the amount I drank.
With all this low-carb, or fat-free, or whatever out there, the most important thing to remember is health. The Food Pyramid is right, and eat your Five-A-Day! Margarette
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

However, if you insist on a diet, I have the perfect one:
You can eat all you want, anything you want, and whenever you want it. You won't lose any weight, but it's very easy to stick to. <G> |

Dark berries as a food suppliment are thought to be helpful for concentration and also good for supple joints. manipulators take note.
Dark berries and cherries are very good for oldies with arthritic complaints. It counter-acts piric acid and dissolves piric chrystals from joints. If you have Gout or bad arthritis look at eating a tin of dark cherries a day. Cheaper than the medication you will need.

Here's my food rules;
Nothing that ever lived in water. Nothing that appears to be in some sort of larvae stage. No fungus or molds (except cheese, because cheese rocks!) |

Mammals start off 'in water', as to birds... so there goes most meat, eggs and any plant seed containing veggies.

Hmmmm.... good point. So I shall rephrase;
Nothing that lives its entire life in a body of water. Nothing with gills. No animal that has a shell or exoskeleton. Nothing that squirts black goo. Nothing you would catch on a boat. Nothing that doesn't have feet. Nothing that has fins or tenticles. Nothing that was once portrayed by Don Knotts. Nothing named "Nemo". There... I think that covers it! |

Well, I guess you came to the right place because you're getting TONS of useful information. Seriously The Magic Café really doesn't serve food so you probably won't get a lot of good information here but I'm sure you can find lots of information elsewhere on the web.
As for myself I have a simple rule. I never eat anything uglier than me. |

I have enough information on how diet affects thought. I just wanted to know if anyone else uses a food based regimen to aid thought in relation to mind based effects.

I try to eat healthy and exercise because I know how good it can make you feel. I've been trying to do what Margarette said. If I really want to eat something, I will, but in moderation. I've also switched to diet pop. Diet Dr. Pepper and Diet Pepsi Vanilla are the best ones I've found.
All this makes me feel less tired as well as feeling better about myself. |

The excellent book, Memletics (http://www.memletics.com/default.asp?ref=550100) has a section on food and its relationship to memory / brain / learning.
