Hey folks,
I need your help in deciding on which coin magic book I should get for now, Rubinstein Coin Magic or Giacomo Bertini System of Amazement? I consider myself an intermediate coin guy. Years ago when I first got started with sleight of hand, coins is what I gravitated towards. I studied Bobo's and Expert Coin Magic and always walked around with coins in hand. I'd like to rekindle that passion as well further my coin skills and was looking into both of these books. Both books seem fantastic and chock full of great coin magic but, since I want to limit myself to just one book for now, I wanted to hear from those of you who actually own BOTH books. Many thanks! Roberto

I would say Rubinstein. Though I don't have the book yet, I am familiar with his work via the old videos and some lecture notes and the At the Table lecture.
Superb coin magic. I think he could beat David Roth in a coin challenge, which I would like to see. Nothing against Roth. Go with Rubinstein. |

I own both, but if I had to make the hard decision, I'd go with Dr. Michael Rubinstein's book.
Why? It's bigger, has a wider variety of material, and just appeals to my sense of magic better. (and I love puns) Dave |

Glad to hear you were steered in what I would consider the "right direction" between the two. I really like the new Dr. Michael Rubinstein Coin Book. It is full of great coin magic that is well within my (what I consider intermediate grasp). The Latta book was a little more difficult for me but I can grasp at least 80% of it. Unfortunately, I feel the Giacomo book would be more out of my grasp, possibly even a niche coin book as his style is very different than what I can do (basing it on his coin dvd [actually CDRom] some time back). It was like Ponta's "Sick" DVD to me. Very fun to watch but nearly impossible to emulate. You will not go wrong with Mike's book. I actually believe in time, it will replace Bobo's "Modern Coin Magic" as the "Go-To" recommended to beginners to intermediates. There is a fantastic mix of sleights, effects and a memorable chapter on puns.

I've got Giacomo´s book...not my kind of magic at all.
He has take classic plots and fits them to his baroque style and handlings, with is valuable, but for me and just for me isn't add necessary improvements to those routines Maybe out there some guys will found this kind of work more suitable for them, after all, on magic we have a lot of approaches!! |

I’ll hop in to give my quick 2 cents as well! I am currently working through the Rubinstein book now and have loved every moment of it. It has so much information on different (and very practical) moves with applications and routines in the book as well. If you check some of the other threads about this book you would be able to find when Mr. Rubinstein posted the table of contents so that you can get an idea of exactly what all is included in this massive book on coin magic. Honestly, I believe this will be one of the best books for years to come on the subject.
Now, concerning the book System for Amazement by Giacomo Bertini. This book focuses on a specific palm and gives you an incredible amount of work on it. Honestly I felt this book was very easy to get into and a lot of the sleights in the book came fairly natural to me. The writing is very clear and I believe I learned more about this specific aspect of coin magic from this book than any other source. If you are only going for one book now and want to broaden your coin magic in general I would suggest the Rubinstein Coin Magic book, but if you would like to hone your studies on a more specific aspect of coin magic then go for Bertini’s System for Amazement. I think you will definitely learn a ton from both and won’t be disappointed either way you go. |

For anyone who is curious, Rick Holcombe posted a video on his YouTube channel reviewing Mr. Bertini's book. It gives some good insight. Mr. Bertini also has some videos on YouTube that you can watch to get an idea of his style.
I don't have System of Amazement, but it's on my list for a future purchase when I've gotten through some of the stuff I've already got (such as Dr. Rubinstein's great book ). |
