I was looking at practical magic knitty knitty bang bang, Does anyone here have this

I don't have Knitty Knitty Bang Bang from Practical Magic, but to me it LOOKS as if it is the same method as Bob McAllister's "Ungimmicked Balloon Penetration" from Tarbell Volume 7. You could email Practical Magic and ask if that's the same method. It's quite practical . You could make it yourself if you have Tarbell 7, but it looks like they have already made it up with good looking props and a fun routine. Dan Harlan also teaches it on his Tarbell video "Tarbell 87: Novelty Magic Part 1" https://www.penguinmagic.com/p/9536 (one of the videos on the Penguin Magic website shows Dan Harlan performing this effect).

Updating this a few years later, because I received a private message from someone asking if I had ever been able to locate the proper size "Airship" balloons.

Repeated inquiries to the Everts Balloon Co. who claim to make suitable "Airship" balloons in sizes that will work with this apparatus --- Airship 40 - 3.5” diameter, 16” length (ideal for Spikes Thru Balloon) and Airship 50 – 4.5” diameter , 22” length (ideal for Turkish Turmoil) --- have not resulted in any way to actually purchase these balloons in North America. Everts Ballon Co. is a wholesaler and the minimum order they require is 5000 balloons. Their North American retail distributors like Amscan and Party City apparently don't have enough demand for balloons if these sizes (3.5” diameter, 16” length , and 4.5” diameter , 22” length) so they don't stock them. Theoretically, Everts Balloon Co. could supply such balloons, but their minimum order requirement puts it beyond the means of an individual to place such an order.

So, anyone seeking proper size balloons for Spikes Thru Balloon (Gurtler/Grant/MAK) or Turkish Turmoil (Grant/MAK) is stuck using the standard Qualatex 350 balloons (3" diameter/50" long). If you want to eliminate the extra long balloon with the awkward "tail" dangling, do as Bill Hegbli suggested and tie a knot in the balloon body , then trim off the "tail" below the knot, so you have a shorter balloon length (about 18" - to - 22"). With Turkish Turmoil it also helps to pre-inflate the balloon before your performance for about 10 minutes (don't tie it off, but use a clip , so you can deflate it) to stretch out the latex a bit, which will let the balloon better fill up the wider diameter (4") Turkish Turmoil tube.

Good idea ... I'll have to try that. Thank you. I had not thought about tying off a shorter section from one of the longer balloons and cutting away the unwanted tail section.

OR if the extra long balloon with the dangling tail doesn't bother you, just perform it as seen here by Michael Stroud -

David, when I worked in a magic shop back in the 90s, the brand of balloons used for these was Decomex out of Vietnam. It looks like they are still around: https://www.decomexballoon.com/.

Not sure how to order but it is at least another lead should you choose to pursue.

Here is the word from Decomex's U.S.A. distributor , BargainBalloons.com (Decomex's manufacturing plant is in Vietnam):

Bummer! That would explain why the magic shops no longer have any.

I should mention that Decomex does make a variety pack of balloons sold under the brand name "Unique" on Amazon, BargainBalloons.com, and at Party City , called "Unique - Vibrant Assorted Party Latex B...... Of 50)" which includes some balloons that are 3" diameter x 13" length. (the other balloons in this variety pack are small round balloons. 6.5" diam. and 4.5" diam.) You get about 15 - 20 of the 3" x 13" balloons in this package of 50 balloons.

The 3" diam. x 13" long ballons are suitable to use in the standard size U.F. Grant/MAK Magic 'Spikes Thru Balloon" tube (which is usually around 3" diam. x 7" long). Not suitable for the larger 'Turkish Turmoil' tube. Keep in mind , these balloons are are very small, only about 3.5" long when uninflated, so they can be a bit awkward to inflate inside the tube, but they work ok. However, I would tend to use the better quality Qualatex 350 balloons, tied-off and trimmed so that they are 3" diam. x 16" - 20" inches long when inflated (depending on how much you trim them). The Qualatex balloons are made from a thicker, better quality latex. Pre-inflate them before a show (don't tie them off , but use a clip or your fingers to keep them temporarily inflated for a minute or two) so the latex gets stretched out a bit , then they are easier to inflate inside the Spikes Thru Balloon tube.

I was surprised to read recently on another magic forum that Qualatex has declared bankruptcy and gone out of business. Apparently some magic stores and balloon twister suppliers still have existing stock , but after that is sold there are no more balloons coming from Qualatex. For entertainers who do a lot of balloon twisting/sculpture as a regular feature of their acts this is very bad news.

Doing a bit of research , it appears that the parent company Pioneer Balloon U.S.A. has declared bankruptcy . Pioneer Europe is still in business for now as far as I can tell , but if balloons must be imported to the U.S.A. from Europe the already high prices of good quality balloons will go up (up and away).
