Trying here for a common theme vital to the performance of Mentalism, trust and audience engagement.
Ideally, each observer has the same experience with paranormal events and the same expectations of you, the performer, to create an experience of Mentalism. This is not possible , and attempts to get everyone aligned or educated to your intent may be futile or difficult in the time allotted. So, an alternative approach is to give everyone a "common enemy" to cast doubt on their preconceived notions and make them open to new ideas. Start off by explaining that everyone's ability to perceive reality is flawed in some way - we are all less than able in some ays and gifted in others. What we clim to see is actually a combination of sensory impressions, life experience and expectations. We make predictions as to what we will observe and reward ourselves if correct. There is an old saying, "Seeing is believing -- I believed it, therefor I saw it." Let's try a little experiment to test everyone's perception. Divide the socially distant group into three teams, adjusting sitting patterns if necessary. Identify them as A, B and C groups. Say to group A, "You are gifted by good memory but have lousy eyesight. You do not always see things accurately." To group B say, "You have great eyesight but are bit dyslexic. You are sometimes confused over what you see." To group C say, "You also have good eyesight but very poor memory. you have even forgotten what I just said." To all, "Now were are all just pretending at your gifts and disabilities and some may wish to replace these with your actual perception impairment." You now explain that you will place a small number of black dots on a card. This will be flashed to each group separately for three seconds. What you see and what you remember will be impacted by your disability even though it is just suggested by me. That is how perception works. You now cover the card with your hand and flash it as described. You now ask everyone to call out their perceived number when you drop your raised hand. They sound out number ranging from 1-4 and sometimes weird ones. No one calls out three. As they look at each other in bewilderment, you drop the card with three dots on it to the table top. Now you get on with your planned demonstration. any one who understands a paddle move can do this, with a prepared card of 1, 2 and 4 dots on various ends. If easier have a card about 2"X 4". How you switch them is a test of your gifts and disabilities
