You may enjoy listening to my interview with Jeff Orlowski, director of the new documentary film, The Social Dilemma.

In the film, a group of founding tech wizards who created Google, Facebook and Twitter warn of the dystopia awaiting us because of our fundamental misunderstanding of the true nature of these social media giants.

If your ISP is also your cable TV provider the commercial interruptions could be a product sold in 10/20/30 second slots based upon internet use and whatever model their data is using. Did you see the hour of PBS last night "Weapons of Influence"?

It's not content so much as stimulation aimed your next click and commitment to further investment with their sponsors. Be it consent, time, or money; it's product.

* Some dated references there including kerosene, radio, and for that matter film. I wonder how Avenue Q looks in 2020 retrospect.

One of the techies in the film, Tristan Harris, is also an amateur magician. He does a mean JW grip vanish to illustrate a point.

I can plan a free hour plus tonight: can I click something, pay something and watch it direct now? Do they have links to the source material that backs up the claims? (six times faster?)

Running time 94 minutes.

It's produced by Netflix, so I imagine you need a Netflix account to access it.

Thank you. It would appear that in order to hear and see what the film makers wanted to warn about one would need to enter into transaction with those very same parties.

Some background: https://www.iab.com/wp-content/uploads/2......INAL.pdf <- their data to advertisers in that market.

Absolutely. I am reminded about Lenin's dictum about rope and hanging.

Thank you. I find this sort of stuff that the big boys are doing fascinating despite the fact that I hate it.

I'm getting a 404 on that, Jon. Try:

That review is a pretty good summary of the strengths and especially the weaknesses of the film. I tried to allude to what I perceived as its inadequacies in addressing fundamental solutions. I think the director's intentions were outstripped by what eventually actually made it to the screen. But given that, I think it's still quite a worthwhile film.

Any comments on the fourth episode? https://www.aptww.org/IntlCatalog.nsf/0/......uide.pdf

Jokes about parents finding their children (children being embarrassed by parents - leaving FB) are a decade old.
Five years ago parents shaming their children on social media made feature articles: https://time.com/3935308/when-parents-pu......ir-kids/

It's been over a week, and no comments about addiction, Rule 34 (ATHENA)... whether or not the speakers own their actions as regards social consequences?

Wow.

https://sproutsocial.com/insights/social-media-personas/

I assumed that this was going on, but I am surprised at the openness, casualness and ease of use implied for the new customer contemplating using these tools, especially the sock puppets.

Re: "whether or not the speakers own their actions as regards social consequences?"

I hate to judge people who are actually owning up to their mistakes, but let's just say that it's a lot easier to admit your mistakes after you've amassed the means (and I assume wealth) to avoid the personal consequences of those mistakes. I think like J. Robert, they were, at best, curious, and had few benign outlets to find out.
